Has anyone ever gone to a con by themselves, I think I might go to Sakura Con alone this year, so I can keep to my own schedule, without having to worry about anyone else. Does anyone have any stories or tips about going solo?

Meet up with people there as in friends from previous years, or start talking to people make friends there from forums, photo groups or public events etc

I don't like the idea of going alone. Yes you meet people there so it isn't lonely but it's more fun going with someone else. It's true that you don't get to do everything you want cos you spend half the time doing something else with the other person. Yet that in itself is enjoyable, because you find something you would have missed otherwise or meet a new friend or come across a showing you might have overlooked.

I find it lonely enough where I am, that there isn't enough friends who watch anime too. To go to the cons by yourself on top of that, just makes it too depressing for me.

I'd like to be able to go in costume for comic con though, sadly my last 2 didn't work well.

I went to new york comic con 2012 mostly by myself. i was suppose to meet up with friends but they didn't come until much later so i was by myself for pretty much the entire day. i loved it though! so very tired by the end of it. it was my first con of that size ever. i'll definitely prepare better next time around.

Thanks for the replies, I am glad that other people have had good times going solo.

It is easier to do random fun things with random people if you bring someone with you... Other wise it is a little creepy.

I would go with this one person. When distance grew, I didn't go again. If I went alone, I'd basically just shop for myself or check screenings. I don't think it would be near as fun with at least sharing the moment with someone you know.

This is an interesting counterpoint, you do kind of stand out when you are alone. I really want to get everything out of it, that I possibly can

Never been to a con alone but I would think there would be ample oppertunity to keep yourself busy with the amount of programming that the con admins put into the prep of the schedule of events. And there seem to always be a screening of something at all times in one of the screening rooms, plus there is always the dealers floor and taking the time to snap some pics of some of your favorite cosplays.

I went to my first few conventions alone. I remember having a great time regardless, and making a bunch of friends through the experience. ^.^ I don't know if I could go to a con completely alone now, though. It would be really different for me since now I'm used to having my cosplay friends, husband, or anime-liking friends tagging along or to meet up with.

I pretty much went to a couple con's myself but I've made a few now good friends there, I can understand the not wanting to conflict the panels you want to see vs what others might want to see etc. cause even though I meet up with friends at cons, I still find myself wandering around taking pics or checking places out and theres just something more peaceful/relaxing for me to do that a bit..the introvert being active I guess lol

When I pretty much solo'd my first con I have to admit I didn't know what to expect since it was literally my first con and it was making me all sorts of nervous and it could be lonely but you gotta realize that you're submerging yourself with other like minded people, and it might be easier said than done but try not be too shy cause most people are nice and would talk to you and geek out but if you encounter some negative party-poopers or simply rude people - just stop and get up and move/ignore them and focus on enjoying the panel; Overall you might just make some friends and it'll help you enjoy it more.

idk what i'm trying to say anymore so i'll stop for now lol

There's been only one time that I tried attending a fan convention with a friend. Neither of us were really interested, and we left after just a couple hours.

Most of my friends have no interest in fannish activities, and the people I've met through my local anime club don't care about cons.

Being an older fan it hard for me not to go alone. Besides My purpose to go to a can is not primarily to meet up with people.
I tri to contribute in other way I am a regular at Kumoricon, some may see me as the guy with the Giant Hello Kitty / Chococat Plush. also run the Otaku over 25, a panel for older Anime Fans. THs yea as well I will tray to introduce Furry 101 the anime version, a panel about furry fandom and connections to anime and the anime fandom.
