I am really glad so many people have good experiences going alone, makes me a lot less nervous. Also gives me hope for maybe making friends there as well.

I've done it. Don't think I feel bad about myself. I really had fun.

I'd be really nervous to go alone. I have crowd anxiety, and having someone I know helps to enjoy the con better.

You can volunteer to work the con too. I think most cons ask for a few dedicated shifts and then you are free to run around all you want. That gives you an alternative social network outside of what you already have. I've gone to 5 or 6 different cons. I tend to go with friends that have a booth in the dealer's room so I run around the con solo but I've got a support network there and it works both ways. One year a girl in our booth was down with food poisoning and since I was at that particular con with my eternal badge I was available to help in the booth without it impacting anyone's enjoyment of the con. When I go in with the dealer's badge I'm expected to help with load in/out, opening the booth in the morning, and breaks. The rest of the time I like to catch industry panels, watch anime, or participate in whatever seems interesting. Any downtime in the schedule has me heading back to the booth to fill in my friends on what I've seen and heard around the con.

Unfortunately, I've pretty much always went to cons solo. But even at that my experiences are limited.
My original Anime hobby pretty much ran from..I want to say 1991 to maybe ~2001.. only got back to watching it again over this last half year.
Went to only about 4-5 cons in general..think I killed my car driving to Dallas for Project Akon 5., drove past a KKK rally in the hills of West VA heading home from a Norfolk,VA con a year or 2 later (yeesh), hit a Cincinnati con I think, a Boston College Con, and one other.
Problem is like another posted..even then I was a bit older-maybe 26-30, never been involved with any anime groups (think the most I can remember seeing was a group from Ann Arbor showing up at some of the cons-mainly was from UofM, which of course I was beyond college time.
Rooming solo sucks (expenses heh), and while I enjoyed going to some of the con rooms and viewing panels it does still feel a lot like being an outsider to all the activity. Heck, I dunno, if I had more involvement with a club or group then, I might not have slipped away from the hobby.

Now the age thing's worse...47/soon 48 isn't quite the demographic of the usual group. (I mean, some that even _I_ could have been a parent of would now be bringing their own kids to the con if they were still in the hobby). And that's another change... lot more literal kids since that time. Not quite doing the "you kids get offa my lawn" kind of thing yet...but it's probably disturbing to them to have a solo old f*rt hanging around at a con.

With the con functions being different now (as it's not like you have to wait to get VHS transfers to see new stuff anymore heh, thanks internet + Crunchy ) almost seems that what's left probably focuses more of the panel rooms, artist rooms, and other activities (cosplay, rpg, etc) which can kind of limit the solo introvert.

Had thought about hitting the local cons this year.. Youmacon (Detroit), Go Daiko-con (pontiac) to see what still was happening.
Originally thought I might get out to an outer con maybe a trip on my motorcycle.. but kinda doubting it.
Anywho..that's just my thoughts here. Definitely would be better if you do have someone to enjoy it with.

I go alone usually. You get to set your own schedule. It can get a little lonely, but I kinda like to hide in the crowd so that's cool. Usually I've gotten to chatting with people in lines, etc.

I've gone to every con except for one, by myself.

The one time I took one of my Ex's to a con was actually disappointing. Of course she loved anime, but I wanted to go here, she wanted to go there, and friction ensued. It actually would have been better if each of us had gone on different days by ourselves:)

I prefer to go it alone, that way you can always do what you want to do. You don't have to compromise this showing or event over another so that your partner or group can have a better experience.

When I go alone, I do what I want, when I want. I've often come across other people there who were into the exact same types of events or shows that I'm into as well, so I would often start out alone, then end up part of a group. However that group would be of the same mind as I as to what we wanted to see, and if they weren't I could split from them with no hard feelings (we'd just met that day after all).

There should be no "Fear," or some such thing involved with going to an event like this by yourself. I find it quite refreshing actually. I also go to the cinema by myself a lot as well, something the vast majority of people don't do, or wouldn't feel comfortable doing (I don't know why, but it's true).

I'd imagine I'd get bored/feel awkward alone. You'll make friends and by the end you won't be alone, however.

I've never been to a con alone but I might do that in the future. There are a few cons coming up in the next few months...>.<

I'm going to a con by myself for the first time in a few days. I know Dragon*Con isn't a strictly anime-based con, but you can bet where I'll be spending a great deal of my time! Also, I am forgoing cosplaying this year, so I will simply have a lot of fun taking pictures and people watching. ^_^

There are many advantages to going alone, no one to check in with, no cross scheduling panels, and pretty much being able to go where you want when you want.
