Buying Legit Anime DVDs?
|
SO it has came to my attention a lot of the animes on here like for example Dragon Crisis!, Campione!, Omamori HImai are pratically impossible to find on DVD. Given you can find them on playtechasia.com but from what I've read alot of them dvds from that site/company are bootlegged. I would like to own an actual "legit" copy. Does anybody have the same problem? Has anybody found a solution to this?

Well I mean if it comes down to it I wouldn't mind owning it if it's dvd or blue-ray so it really comes down to owning a legit disk of it

you need to understand that the business end of it needs to make profits, you can also go to your nearby hobby store and ask.

Campione! is out on Japanese Blu-Ray and Region 2 DVD as well. Sentai has the rights to Campione! in North America at least, don't think the discs are out yet. Even in Japan they are not done releasing the Blu-rays yet so there is no box set. Here is disc 1 which has links to the rest:
www.amazon.co.jp/カンピオーネ-~まつろわぬ神々と神殺しの魔王~-1-初回生産限定版-Blu-ray/dp/B008DEPETW Dragon Crisis! came out on Blu-Ray in Japan at a minimum, not sure about DVD Region 2. Came out in 2011. Looks like Dragon Crisis! was never licensed for North American release so an import is your only legal way to buy. I am kind of shocked there is no boxed set yet, here is Blu-ray #1: www.amazon.co.jp/ドラゴンクライシス!①-Blu-ray-橘秀樹/dp/B004I73SKK Omamori Himari came out on Blu-ray and Region 2 DVD in Japan in 2010. Funimation had it on a survey of what to acquire but looks like they never acquired it. Doesn't seem to have been licensed in North America so it looks like a Blu-ray or Region 2 DVD purchase is your only legal option. Here is the Blu-ray box set: www.amazon.co.jp/おまもりひまり-Blu-ray-びーまいびーBOX-ウシロシンジ/dp/B006474ZGI |

Does anybody have the same problem? Has anybody found a solution to this? The site you mentioned is definitely selling bootlegs. Aside from the prices, another factor that gives it away is that everything is sold in complete series sets, while authentic Japanese discs are sold as singles. Boxsets are sometimes available, but typically well after the series has ended, and certainly at nothing close to those prices. There are other clues, such as selling English subtitled versions of series that don't have any such legal version. For legit discs, you may want to check here: http://www.yesasia.com/us/en/home.html I hope your wallet is prepared, however, as a single legit Japanese disc sells for more than a bootleg of a complete series. They are also not guaranteed to have English subtitles. Keep in mind that for DVDs, Japan has a different region code than the United States, while for Blu-ray, it is the same. Basically, Japanese Blu-rays will play here, but for DVDs you would either need a hacked region free player or another solution. |

Discs available before they are out in Japan are another clue. As I said Campione isn't done coming out on Blu-ray in Japan yet (Campione! BD 6 comes out February 27, 2013) but you can probably get a bootleg boxed set already because it is just made from TV broadcast rips...
There are funny bootlegs available like the complete Girls Und Panzer... even though it hasn't finished airing yet, the episode 11-12 delay into March caught them off guard but they're bootlegs so who are you going to complain to if they are not as advertised? Bootleg English subs may either be "Backstroke of the West" like machine-generated subs or they may use copies taken from fansubbers or even CrunchyRoll rips. Stay away from crappy bootlegs. It is better to stream it here legally. |

It is the case that so so many series are just impossible to buy legitimately first hand, even popular series like bebop and evangelion are pretty hard to get (for a non stupidly inflated price (£100 is totally unreasonable for instance)). Even things that are not too old like 'Voices of a distant star' from makoto shinkai I cant get ahold of. It kinda sucks |

I had the same problem with Gintama! I couldn't find any merchandise except for four ridiculously overpriced discs on Amazon. Luckily, I found season 1&2 on ebay, although I have to watch them on my computer. I'm gonna find a region free (is there such a thing?!) or a region 2 DVD player and a TV that supports it...

Some cheap flea market DVD players have a region menu when they boot but they aren't always the best quality. I had one but it died.
If you are in the US or Canada then Bluray is your best bet as Bluray Region A is Japan and North America. DVDs are almost the same price in Japan anyways. |

If you have a desktop PC then you can also simply buy 2 dvd drives and set 1 to say US encoding and one to your native (UK for me). I believe that should work

I believe that should work Or use VLC-media player, which bypasses the region protection. Applies only to DVD:s though. No similar solution for BR:s, yet. |

Yeah as hpulley said it's best to buy the Blu-Rays because Japan and North America share the same region. More and more Blu-Ray releases are now featuring English subtitles as well - but not all. |
