Unless it's incredibly mainstream and popular and ensures that a lot of non-Japanese theaters could draw consistently large crowds, it probably wouldn't make it into theaters. Examples like the Pokemon, Digimon movies, etc. where a lot of money can be made by the theaters, distributors, producers, etc.

Anime is a niche.

Because some people just don't like anime. They find it "gay," if you will. All my friends judge me because I enjoy episodes of Cowboy Bebop. They LOVED The Secret World Of Arietty until I told them that it was created by Studio Ghibli, which is in Japan, just dubbed over.

The AMC near me used to show anime movies on Thursday nights. A good time indeed.

Unless it's a Hayao Miyazaki flick, anime just doesn't put enough asses in the seats to be shown in theaters. Non-Ghibli movies are only going to get limited distribution at best, and theaters don't do anything DVDs, BDs, and streaming don't do better. Not as long as they keep charging an arm and a leg for tickets and popcorn.
