Just curious to know who on the CR forums works in the IT industry. What do you do? What made you want to get into the field? Do you enjoy your current job? If not, what would you prefer to do?

Personally, I currently work as a NOC Analyst for a consulting company but I have also done CRM software support, SQL server support, system administration and desktop support. Video games is actually what got me into the IT field initially. As I child, I always wanted to be a software developer but somehow that got pushed to the side. I would like to do software engineering eventually but I haven't coded in years and It would take some time for me to get back into it.

I do game programming, but my brother is on the IT side of things - he installs high-end connections for businesses and such out in California. Most of it is way over my head when he talks about NOCs and cabinets and such, programming seems way simpler to me!

I used to do IT work, I'm trying to get back into it - put my application out there - I got sick of it at the time and got a slacker job cooking at a pub. But now real life responsibilities are making me look for higher pay work. I don't look forward to going back to holding the hands of people that can't follow simple instructions though.

Network Engineer, Infrastructure Engineer, Systems Administrator. I've done them all. Looking for a job right now but it's brutal in R.T.P. right now... Unless I wanna code which I don't do. I can't stand programming, makes my eyes bleed.

It's not all bad, you just need to have the passion, confidence, patience, ect. to be able to study and work in the industry.

Im curious. What did you actually learn in college? I dont have a degree and everything I learned in college that had anything to do with IT was pretty useless so I quit after 2 years.

I'm a soon-to-be CIS major currently in my Junior year. What got me interested in the field was watching the Borne Trilogy movies. Every time they show the computer technicians tracking down Borne, I found it very fascinating!

What did you actually learn in college?

Programming, management, accounting, marketing, database, business tech, etc...
Overall, everything is in theory and generalized. Basically, it's all useless.

Currently, I'm looking into internships that pays.

Yea... I started learning programming with VB in the 10th grade. Taught myself C++ when I got my first IT job doing SQL support. If I could do it all over again, I would have never set foot on a college campus. Everyone ive ever worked with that actually knew their shit was self taught.

What are you actually looking to get into?

I have found a better job in a different field.. but I still write a lot of stuff at night if I am not watching anime.
