I saw a need for a group dedicated to the mature anime fan. So join already!

Oh! Me, me! I joined!

So should we use this as a short intro forum?

Hi! So, I wrote on the wall already, but just to reiterate, I'm 28, and started watching anime when I was 26, so I'm not an anime veteran as some of you may be! I live in Michigan, have three awesome kiddos that are 10, 8, and 7, and a pretty great husband I've been married to for almost 11 years now!

So how did I get into anime? I was flippin through Netflix titles, and saw Princess Tutu. I was like, "oh, what the heck.. why not?" It was so different than what I had expected, and after I finished, I wanted to find some more anime just to check it out. And TA-DA! I haven't stopped since!

I admit sheepishly that I kind of adore the more romcom animes... it's a guilty pleasure. But I also really enjoy some of the more action/thriller ones, and especially animes that challenge you to think a little. I'm watching Shin Sekai Yori right now, and really enjoy it from both an entertainment angle and the sociological aspects it brings to the table.

So, now that I've written a book here, who are all of you guys? What sort of anime are you into? Is anyone here into manga? (I love it!)

Thanks again for creating this forum! It'll be nice to meet some people my own age that share the same interests! All my friends laugh and think I'm strange for watching anime and reading manga!

Thanks for joining. I got into anime in the late 80's primarily because of Akira and Fist of the North Star VHS tapes that my found their way into my hands, but if you want to get real technical I started with Robotech and Battle of the planets... I do like Manga, and have read quite a bit, but I grew up reading american comics, so I'm a bit spoiled on the way we do comics in the states, no disrespect.

I too want to say thanks for this group. Being an old..er..anime fan sometimes is very lonely. There is no one to talk to about your passion.

For me it's even worse..I'm an older anime fan girl. For me, yaoi is like a pleasant word sent from heaven. Unfortunately, as a fan girl, I have to find most of my "entertainment" in manga. As far as I know, there hasn't been a new anime yaoi release in some time..with the exception of Ai No Kusabi...which I have to add, the remake is not even close to being as good as the original.

Anyway...suffice to say I am over 30 and have been for some time. I have only been watching anime for about 6 years give or take. What saddens me is that it took so long for me to discover it. There is a lot of anime I missed...my mission is to buy as many Geneon titles as I can afford. I still feel sorrow over having missed out on Descendants of Darkness. Maybe, someday I can add it to my collection.

As for genre of anime I like most except for hentai, yuri, ecchi and I hate anything moe. Although...sometimes I have liked an anime that has been classified as ecchi.

If you haven't already seen them I recommend: FMA Brotherhood, Heroic Age, Samurai 7, and Berserk. They are all titles heavy on mature themes and awesome epic story lines. Also Cowboy Bebop and Psycho Pass are quite good.... ooh one more Outlaw Star it's a classic.... I've been over 30 for awhile my self. Hitting the big 40 in month so...

HI! names flashersmurf wanted to introduce myself. I started watching anime many, many moons ago.
Just to clarify i am pushing the big 4 0 this year. i grew up on the wrong side of smurf village. (heh heh hence the trenchcoat). I am not as dirty of an old man as the name suggests. i always thought the image of a smurf in a trenchcoat funny.

i grew up watching astroboy, battle for the planets (gatchaman) and Ultraman (the original "power ranger"), speed racer, star blazers and Robotech on UHF stations. That was during the days of the "backyard convention and Doctor Who bootleg parties" D&D would be played as well.

i hated american animation in the 70s and 80s. and please do not get me started on Disney. I guess i was drawn by the on-going story style (like soap operas) vs the 1 episode 1 story of US cartoons. Although as far as US cartons go i am a fan of the original scooby-doo, Batman the animated series (1992), Tiny Toon Adventures and Animaniacs.

I still have my "emergency copy" of Akira and Warriors of the Wind. (God that edit was awful). My ex-wife took the rest of my collection.
I had to rebuild my collection after 2002. so i started with Cowboy bebop and went from there.
my daughter was 4 when she discovered inuyasha. she woke up while i was watching Adultswim.
we have watched together ever since.

flashersmurf..lol, I feel the same about Disney, my granddaughter had a Disney Princess dvd someone gave her and I trashed it. Well, in the spirit of being green I gave it away to the goodwill. But Disney is VERBOTEN in my house.
Anyway, she has been over Disney for a long time, ..right now she is into Hetalia, I can't seem to get into that anime, but she is all about Hetalia.

I'm going to steal some of those anime suggestions, moneygrip -- I LOVED FMA Brotherhood, so I'll trust your recommendations that the others you mentioned are in good taste!

And I've heard of that Cowboy Bebop about a million times, and how people just think it's amazing, but I haven't tried it out yet. It's awful, but the name just sounds.... hokey? I know, it's pretty much a cardinal sin to even think this way.... judging a "book by its cover", so to speak... I should be ashamed!

Look, I just guilted myself into looking up a synopsis.... I'll have to report later on whether or not I tried an episode out!

Has anyone seen Gintama? It's another anime I hear come up again and again, but haven't given a chance. I hear it's supposed to be hilarious...?

And come on guys, who hates Disney?!? Although, I did grow up on it, so I am more than slightly biased. If your stance on disliking it is because of what the brand represents, and its influence on children, then I can understand your hesitation. I was never a fan of Disney princesses, and encouraged my daughter to look elsewhere for role models.

You'll like Cowboy Bebop I almost guarantee it. Check out Heroic Age I really liked that as well. Heroic Age and Samurai 7 you can stream on Netflix so that's pretty handy...

Me....I love Gintama. It is so funny. I haven't watched for awhile though. I want to get back into it as soon as I'm done with some other series I'm watching. Cowboy Bebop is good too..Spike is such a cool character.

But just because "everyone" likes an anime doesn't mean you will like it. Case in point is FMA. everyone seems to love that anime but .I just can't get into it although I've tried. It should be just up my alley but I don't know why I can't get into it. People are always recommending it to me..I feel guilty for not liking it. Same for Bleach...I use to like it a lot but it seems to have lost its way..or maybe I had enough of Ichigo.

Sorry about the Disney thing...it is Disney Princess, you're right about having your daughter look elsewhere for role models...and I wasnt too happy with the message of Wreck It Ralph..like "Huh"?

I have a question, has anyone ever seen the anime called Mad Bull 34? It's an older anime, I wasn't into anime back then, but its getting a re-release.

Otaku USA says its "..possibly the greatest anime in history." But a review on ANN says it garbage and "..a vile piece of misogynistic filth." Hmm. It just seems interesting to me that an anime can have such opposite reviews. I will more than likely buy it. Looks like its just the type of hard core action I like..

Also very happy that Kill Me Baby is getting a release..I'll definitely buy that. Its so funny. I can't understand why the Japanese fans say it's the most boring anime of 2012.

OK those conflicting reviews of MAD-Bull 34 have me intrigued. I'll have to look into that one. As for FMA Brotherhood it takes about 20 or semi-mediocre episodes and then it blows the doors off. As for Bleach if you skip the filler seasons entirely it's amazing. The filler is totally irrelevant to the main story and is mostly atrocious....

I thought I saw Descendants of Darkness on Netflix streaming.

I'm 24. I've been watching anime for about 10 years now. I love anime , however I don't watch it like I used to. There was a time could watch almost any anime and expect to enjoy it. Now I've grown kind of picky. The overall style of anime has changed and the types of stories animator are telling are changing. Some of my favorites were/and still are Detective Conan, Inuyasha, FLCL, Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, Chobits, Tenchi, Death Note, pretty much 2007 and older.

There isn't a lot of anime I watch these days that i loved. I watched Kids on the Slope recently and I loved it. I tried watching SAO but I just couldn't get into it. I watch Durarara a long while back and that wasn't bad.

I wonder if anime is getting worse or if I may be losing interest. I really hope the later isn't true.

Does anyone have any recommendations for newer shows?

I wouldn't say it's gotten worse but there's so much of it now that like with anything that becomes over saturated it's hard to find the good stuff. These aren't brand new, but FMA Brotherhood and Heroic Age are both awesome IMO. As for the new stuff on CR: Magi, Hakkenden: Eight Dogs of the East, Blast of Tempest, THE UNLIMITED Hyobu Kyosuke, and Shin Sekai Yori (From the New World) are pretty good. I really enjoy Hunter X Hunter as well.
