I always here that FMA Brotherhood is really good. Do you think it is necessary to watch the first FMA before diving into Brotherhood?

No, not at all -- It's not set up as a "season 1" and "season 2". Brotherhood isn't the continuation of FMA, but rather a retelling. The story deviates from the first after a few eps, and delves deeper and darker than FMA ever does.
I had always thought the same thing as you, so I watched FMA first too. I liked it, and by the end, I was like, "woohoo!" season two! So I started Brotherhood and was like "wait a minute....It's the same thing!" I was disappointed, but kept watching anyway. And got totally sucked in. Brotherhood was great! I totally recommend it. Actually, I personally liked both, but I think it might be because FMA was first. I got to know a lot of the characters from FMA, and there was this one character I LOVED, and he didn't get nearly as much screen time in Brotherhood, so I was sad about that. Had I watched Brotherhood first, I don't think I probably would have enjoyed FMA as much.

But to sum up, No, you don't have to watch one before the other. They're both good, but I'd definitely recommend you watch Brotherhood! :)

Hope this helps!

The first FMA did the same thing the first Hellsing did. The started the anime's but when they were ready to wrap up the anime the Manga was still going strong, so basically the first FMA while good is an "interpretation" of the manga as the second season has nothing to do with the manga. FMA Brotherhood was done when the manga was complete so it is considered canon and it's WAY better the plain old FMA. Same thing goes for Hellsing just skip it and watch Hellsing Ultimate. Just for the record FMA Brotherhood is one of the greatest anime's of all time IMO....

As for FMA Brotherhood it takes about 20 or semi-mediocre episodes and then it blows the doors off.
The reason for that is likely due to the existence of the first FMA series. The first series followed the canon storyline pretty closely up until about the point Greed was first introduced, but when they caught up to the current manga material the original author told the studio to have fun with creating their own take on what should happen for the rest of the story, rather than pull a Naruto/Bleach and make endless fillers until there was more canon material to adapt. Thus when the manga was near being finished and FMA Brotherhood was greenlit I think they opted to kind of speed through the initial canon plot that the first FMA adapatation already covered so that watchers of the original series wouldn't feel like they were rewatching to much of the same material, while still keeping the story complete.

That's exactly what happened. I was just too lazy to write all that up. Thank you though you nailed it.

No problem. Just figured I'd give some context for people that haven't watched the series. Like you I greatly recommend FMA Brotherhood. Too often shows don't end quite right and leave you hanging with unanswered questions. I think that this series had one of the most complete story's from begin to end of any that I've ever watched.

I completely agree. I've watched the series about three times subbed and twice dubbed I just love it. Have you by chance watched Heroic Age? it's another epic story but hard sci-fi with a very satisfying ending without all the loose plot holes.... I think it flies under most peoples radar which is a shame...Highly recommended and you can stream it on Netflix.

Haven't seen it. I'll keep it in mind. Prepping for a move next month so I probably won't pick anything new up for a bit though.

EDIT: Although it also looks like you can watch it on Hulu for free right now so I might check out an episode or two when I get the chance.

I don't think you'll be disappointed. I hate to keep pimping it, but it's in my top 5 anime's of all time. You gotta see it in HD though. It's in space after all. Good luck with the move. I had to move 3 times this year due to some BS, and that shit is no fun....

Yeah I plan on watching it when I get the chance. Always interested in finding something new. Hopefully the move isn't too much of a pain but I'm moving to a different state so it isn't one of the simple local 1 day transfer of stuff type moves. Got a lot of crap that has to get taken care of since I won't be back here anytime soon.

Moving to Idaho from California. The wife's got family up there.

BTW just watched the first episode of Heroic Age and I like it so far. The art style seems to be a nod to oldschool anime although of course more polished. Kind of seems to be a nice blend of science fiction and heroic saga fiction so far.

Yep, I'm here and I'm in.

Spent President's Day weekend catching up on "Walking Dead" -- I'd tried to watch it last year and it didn't grab me. I watched it from the beginning upto this season. I also watched the entire BBC "Being Human," just in time, it turns out, as the current season in UK will be the last. Slept through US Being Human last night. Just a little break from Anime. I can barely remember what I've watched recently.
I usually have to see Anime twice to get it to stick, and even then I may remember nothing. It's been that way as long as I've been watching Anime. I cou;dn't make heads or tails of Inuyasha or Full Metal Alchemist -- although Bo-bo-bo-bo Bo-bo-bo always amused me no end. Knowing the characters isn't as essential as in the ones with more structured plots.

Planning to watch "Time of Eve," in news on CR, available to 2/28, next. Just re-ordered my queue to mix it up. I have Netflix, Crunchy Roll, and Hulu Plus streaming through my XBox 360 (and Anime-plus on my computer for downloads I can put on DVDs: I like to watch a lot of anime frame by frame or slow-mo, ones that have good artwork in them, just for the visual experience..

Naruto has long been my favorite; however, when we lost Jiraiya, I lost interest. I like the interpersonal parts and the Konoha parts of the series more than the away battling parts, though the battles are all good: clear and understandable, with personality.

Mentioned the new one,"Time of Eve," in case anyone wants to watch at the same time and comment here, like a book club?
