Also it can really help your social standing which, probably going to get some flak, is important. FB can however be detrimental in the way that a good amount, if not most statuses are annoying and/or demeaning to others. It really depends on the person, I only use mine to check up on things, maybe once a day. It's not a bad news feed for things that are going on locally.

If you're in an organization or setting up an event it's a lot easier to make a Facebook page to keep people up to date than it is to make a website and/or send emails constantly. It's also a good way to stay close with friends who move away or are out of the area.
