http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VH38KGzEy2A ~ Until The Day I Die by Story of the Year Naruto vs SAsuke
This is the only amv I have ever accidentally then intentionally watched they were never my cup of tea but hey "I love me some naruto and this song right here and done the way its done really makes you feel the friendship of these two. Also I don't know if this is the original one i saw but it did make me tingly in my stomach like the first time I watched it many years ago. Like I said many years ago this one is good but since its been so long I have no idea if its the orginal and if it will make you feel how I felt.

Hmmm. Seems Shrapnel893's idea to list them is a good idea.

(I Cannot Believe My Little Sister is this Cute) Ore no Imōto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai (Make me watch it) - √Bestamvsofalltime ▪ Furor AMV - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBJWw9_M5SQ

Sword Art Online (S.A.O.) (The best by miles that I have ever seen) - Our Miracle by iFedeBankai - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIFVjbRXUqs

Bakemonogatari - (I want to say the lyrics are a very poor indicator of the plot other than it is one of the best written and looking romance animes out there) - Kosmit - The Darkest of Places by majinosity - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nqw_juaK3GI

Nisemonogatari (Bakemonogatari Season 2) - √Bestamvsofalltime ▪ Orion AMV - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnQxiN-H9gY&feature=related

[AKROSS Con 2011] Enchanted - AMV Competition Enterent + winner - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mI1sbVTHcgw (I agree with the user who posted this video, "Mention the anime name and I will remove your comment and also hunt you down for trying to give me strikes." as it is terrible).

Fate Matrix AMV Best Drama Anime Boston 2012 (Along with a list/number of awards far too long but totally deserved) Has a lot of Romantic/Comedy Anime in there like Toradora! - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWxMOH4zuKc

Toradora! (Not a terrible Romance anime, just average. AMV made me watch it) - Toradora! AMV - Check Yes Juliet by ChangitoLoko - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpiiEOUYqw0

Avatar: The Legend of Korra (A short AMV, but amusing none the less) - I like it like that by LuzMalfoy - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMC0NXd1PXI

Gunslinger Girl (Make me watch it) - Gunslinger Girl AMV - Broken Girl (Matthew West) [720p] by snobaste -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9jBIMs6yAE

Baccano! (Personally not a fan of the anime but a very amusing AMV) - Ladd Russo AMV - Don't Stop Me Now by Zolfji -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDMcXRrM2ok

Katanagatari (MAJOR SPOILERS HERE! I WOULD SAY DO NOT WATCH PAST 1 MINUTE IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN IT! Great Anime) - Katanagatari - Lay Me to Sleep by kail123 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xbOE9Kop5A

Note I had seen most of these after I saw the anime. I have indicated when it made me watch it. Either way, these are AMVs I think could convince people to try watching the respective anime's they are for

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hq-iF7tqCyc This didn't make me watch One Piece but it's a freaking awesome AMV anyways. That made my friend start watching it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1USZ_aflKW0 This one is just great if you watched and like The Familiar of Zero. If you havent seen the show don't watch it. Too many spoilers.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJu87csH2ZU I showed this one to a friend and they also started to watch Neon Genesis Evangelion

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfOWz_RJBz8 this is just one of the best AMVs i have ever seen. so i felt it necessary to share it!

With the exception of the Evangelion one I loved ever last one of those AMVs :D

I don't think that I've been ever swayed in watching an Anime series because I watched a fan-made Anime Music Video. I scarcely watch them to be a factor in what I pick to watch.

Probably the only internet video that made look at a series to actually watching it is a song clip from that festival episode of Haruhi Suzumiya. That was when I was YouTubing more often because YouTubing was new and such and shiny.

I tend to avoid amv's like the plague. The only thing more abhorant are most fandubbed to english anime songs by people who think they can sing but in reality can't. The rare exceptions are the parody type AMV's that are more than just a bunch of clips/artwork with some unrelated song that the creator finds personally appropriate, and instead give the amv something to stand on its own legs with.

For instance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQw05e26I-k is an old ass amv that existed before youtube that not only in oddly appropriate fashion did an AMV of Evangelion using Rammsein's Engel, but more importantly actually spent the time to synch the animation with the song to make it look like the characters were actually singing the song which made it both epic and funny as hell.

Also even though you might go crazy if you watch the whole thing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJgDmw22XR8 this "amv" of a memorable Umineko No Naku Koro Ni scene is good for some lulz even though its for the most part a looped part of a chorus of an old 80's song.

Even an AMV parody reversal like the brony take on Higurashi's second season can be interesting.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0xXDlsoZIc
Its worth noting that I don't mind the generic clips/images+song with no extra work put into it if the song is actually from the anime itself, because at the very least it showcases the song and keeps the entire thing relevant.

Generally speaking though I find AMV's to have zero effect on whether I will pick up watching an anime as they don't really give you any feel for the anime itself. Sometimes there can even be a negative effect if I simply can't stand the song in question and start associating it with the show the AMV is trying to showcase.

Basically for me there is just an inherent dissonance present in most AMV's. Just because there is a song with some clips of a show doesn't mean they go together. If you want me to appreciate an AMV there has to be some extra work done to try and fuse the two together in a greater fashion than simply taking your favorite love song and throwing it together with your favorite clips from your favorite Romcom anime. It has to be a work of art that is enjoyable in its own right, or failing that if traileresque like most AMVs attempt to be, actually feature a song that is part of the original work rather than something random the creator of the AMV happens to personally like.

I mean no offense to the OP when I say that his posted AMV wouldn't have inspired me to watch TWGOK at all, and its one of my favorite anime/manga out there that I keep current with reading. I would have been more inspired to watch it from listening to the epic full Oratorio opening song with nothing but a random one still image, or from the random Shiori baka clips that you can find on youtube. Its nothing against AMV enthusiasts personally, AMV's just don't float my boat because they usually just seem to arbitrary and disconnected from the show. I'm more likely to look up the song after watching your typical AMV than to actually look up the anime itself.

I just watch them for enjoyment. Most of the ones I find do fit the nature of the show, but some AMVs are meant to convey another tone with the show (or shows) than it actually presents. It's all about creativity and having fun. Just as with English dubs, AMVs and their makers have gotten better and better, though there are still slip-ups here and there from time to time. But that's a part of learning and improving.

Honestly - it's always the other way around. AMVs convince me to listen to bands. This was the first time I listened to Rise Against.

"...AMVs that made you watch an Anime"

If anything, AMV's steer me away. I hate them. The meaningless music, the dangerously cheesy lyrics, and the sugar-coated-sugar-covered-in-sugar-dipped-in-sugar-with-a-side-of-diabetes-and-sugar videos are just...

...just terrible.

Perhaps I was miss phrasing myself. When I say inspired me to watch an anime, I don't mean I see an AMV than go "I am going to watch that" now. I meant it more in the fact that an AMV may be interesting enough to put an anime on my radar, making me go and look it up and if the plot summary seems interesting then go watch it.

Also, no need to worry, I took no offence. You are totally entitled to your opinion of AMVs.

Cool. I'm glad that came across clearly being the internet and all.. I have nothing against those who like AMV's and I'm glad that people can get enjoyment out of them.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LV7AzNYh5bo Made me think Soul Eater was a horror anime...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6n7l4JUSSNc Kuroko no Basket
(Warning: minor language)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtEXIbWwM_k FMA Brotherhood
(Warning: MAJOR spoilers; don't watch if you don't want to spoil the ending for yourself!)

That's all I can remember off the top of my head... There's another one I remember my friend showed me that was like a mix of several different anime and it was really well done, but I don't remember what it was called. If I find it I'll come back and add it.

Anime: Neon Genesis Evangelion

Song: Engel by Rammstein

At first I saw this because I'm a Rammstein fan and I have see Asuka in other media. This really made me want to see the anime because of all the lovely faces that Asuka makes in the End of Evangelion parts.

She looks happy. She probably makes that face if and when she's raping Shinji.
