When you practice your kana,
write them in "a i u e o" order. |

Kana order doesn't seem as important. I've been using so many various sites, books, and speaking with people and the order changes. a i u e o is definitely the one I see the most (and now I have the youtube song stuck in my head...)

It is important for things like most indexing/ordering patterns, dictionaries, etc. (Think of how often our alphabetical ordering is used) It is called goujon. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goj%C5%ABon The other ordering system is based around a poem and is called iroha. http://www.sljfaq.org/afaq/iroha.html It is not used as often, but pops up occasionally. Again, you would be doing yourself a disservice not to learn the kana in the correct order. |

I haven't really thought about that.
It is the order I learned them in (using Genki) but it never particularly clicked that it seemed any more important. |
