I love Japan and I have a lot of Japanese friends, but it seems like as if some people in my family (who are Koreans) seem to despise the Japanese. Of course, I know the reasons behind these emotions, but I was wondering if anyone else has also experienced similar issues?

Many of my Korean friends seem to have the same problems, and also the same (vice-versa) for my Japanese friends. It's mostly our elders such as grandmas/grandpas. It's pretty uncomfortable and unsettling, really, knowing that some of my friends' parents/grandparents don't like my race and vice versa. Anyone else experience problems related to this?

Oh, and to edit a little more in - similar cases for my Chinese friends.

Koreans and Japanese are part of the same race. They are very closely related peoples, so the hate among them does not make very much sense. When they hate each other, they are hating themselves.

Somebody once explained to me that most Asians hate the Japanese because at one time or another Japan occupied their homeland. Most recently in WWII. The Japanese were pretty brutal in their occupation of foreign lands in WWII and hatred dies out slowly.

I went to a school where 90% of the students were nikkeis(Japanese descendants that reside in a foreign country) and i really didn't know about this. Grandparents may think this way but my friends don't, however i can say that they are a very close community and don't like strangers.

My dad vietnamese and he doesn't like cambodians. idk why.

Who could possibly harbor resentment towards a country that your country has a history filled with centuries of hatred and bloodshed with.

I'm Japanese, and I HATE Koreans. It's like they go out of their way to be hated. I also hate the British, French, Filipino, African, Australian, Inuit, Spanish, German, Scottish, Lebanese, Scandinavian, Afghans, Dutch, Croatian, Irish, Americans, Chileans, Indians, Romanians, Italians, Greeks, Thai, Kazakhs, Norwegians, Puerto Ricans, Jamaicans, Tibetans, Chinese, Welsh, Turks, Swedes, Israelis, Austrians, Slovenes, Nepalese, Taiwanese, Arabs, Canadians, Iraqis, Dominicans, Polish, Swiss, Libyans, Portuguese, Slovakians, and the Venezuelans, all for the same reason.

If I'm remembering correctly from what I watched on the Korean Broadcast Station, the Japanese invaded and tried to many dominate parts of S. Korea (not sure entirely about the Northern region). That program also talked about how many people suffered under Japan's control. I saw that about 3 months ago, so I don't remember everything clearly.

Maybe that history still causes grief between Japan and Korea today.

It's mostly due to what happened in the past, and I figure it'll take at least another generation, maybe two, of peace between the nations for this whole hatred and prejudice thing to die out.

Here in Europe it's a lot of the same.
My own grandmother up until her deathbed still disliked the Germans for what they did in WWII, the people I've spoken with that lived during World War II and were back then living in the old Dutch/Indian colonies also still harbored a deep hatred against the Japanese as well.
Same goes for a lot of people in the US that still haven't forgiven Japan for Pearl Harbor and it's the same the other way around for Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The dying out part is already happening by the way, partly thanks to the Internet people are starting to see for themselves that the others aren't as bad as their grandparents, parents or even government is telling them.
Why do you think for example China's government is still censoring the internet?

Gosh! The people may learn that the Japanese and Americans love their children too!
