Case in being: Dragon Crisis.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is now more or less a love or hate thing. I, for one, really love it, I could give my reasons why but I'll give someone else a chance first. No anime is a perfect 5 stars (in my opinion of course) because nothing is perfect. Take Evangelion for example, it has numerous flaws but it's still regarded as something groundbreaking.

I definitely agree! Just because I didn't love it doesn't mean it isn't any good. Like you said how you were about to give your reasons, I've discussed with another member on this topic before and listened to their reasons why they loved it. After reading what they wrote I really did see their side. Like I said before, everyone views anime differently lol but I will admit that although I wasn't crazy about Neon Genesis Evangelion I can definitely see how somebody could love it. It's definitely unique and interesting.

The manga for them should've clued you in what the anime was going to be like haha

steins gate.. not most but it doesn't go off the radar in terms of how highly ranked it is

haruhi - people have many differing opinions about this anime. But the people who love this series really LOVE it. Like me.

Hyouka - didn't know there was a lot of buzz around this series. Pretty good series but not a masterpiece. Definitely above average though.

Steins; gate - again, opinion. But those who love it LOVE it.

My most over ranked: Neon Genesis Evangelion. But I've taken it back recently after hearing different opinions from people who love it. I just think I need to watch the films. Overall though, anime is all opinion. Such as when people on crunchyroll give an anime a perfect 5 stars all across the board and it turns out to be such a mediocre anime. Hey!...I like Dragon Crisis

So YOU'RE one of the members that gave that show five stars and wasted a day of my life.

And it wasn't that I disliked the characters but the final climax was pretty stupid.

Personally for me, Clannad and Clannad After story. It's pretty ironic for me to say that since I'm a huge fan of romance animes, but I found 80% of the anime to be boring to the point where I forced myself to try to finish the series because of hearing many good things about it. The character-art is also very uncreative, almost all of the female characters look the same to me(especially the faces)

I will admit that the ending was pretty sad though

Quite shocked to hear some people say steins;gate is overrated though- it's one of my favourites. I guess it's for sci-fi geeks such as myself

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Writer said fuck trying to use a medium to get his point across, he was just going to overtly tell you his convoluted point.

One of my many gripes with that overrated anime.

I am sure I don't really need to say this since you guys mostly resolved it on your own but lets keep the personal stuff out of forum topics. If you got an issue with another user just take it to pm's. Also Waters there are lines out there, you were edging up to them with some of your comments. People disagree all the time, doesn't make anyone more right or wrong.

On topic I got to say Bakemonogatari for me. I watched the first episode and was just left mystified as to why people think it is good. I pretty much hated it from about 5 minutes in.

such as? by the way the show had many "points", name me tittles that have done what nge have done prior to nge, or elements perhaps. There are reasons nge is the most influential anime of the 90's and still is today.

over rated tittles or just popular? i think its mostly that people love said anime's to death, sao, naruto.... I guess the big three in general, but what happens with fans like these is they cant name any other shows that they might like, almost like a "one trick pony", I've seen bits and pieces of bakemonogatari, its a "neat show" I wish I could keep up with it but I only know soo much japanese.

but anyways I think its more a conflict about how much people enjoy a said anime vs how much they think the show is better than everything else to have come out of the woodwork.

Birdy the Mighty: Decode is underrated not overrated. The original OVAs even more so. It's a shame because it's such a great show.

Just to be clear, what did NGE do? What influences did it create, and how is it still a big influence today?

+1 vote towards Haruhi.

The first season was decent at best; the episodes being out of order is really the only thing about it that was unusual at all, and the characters really are pretty boring, flat, and cliched, and the premise doesn't have much of a real point to it.
The second season is probably the worst thing I have ever seen in anime. Endless Eight was truly painful to get through, and I even skipped a few of those. The "Sigh of" arc was not much better, using the same "oh no, we'd better give Haruhi everything she wants so she doesn't destroy us all!" premise that had been used more than once in the first season. It didn't drag out as unbearably as Endless Eight, but it was still overly long and could have easily been cut down to two episodes, if it needed to be included at all (incidentally, it didn't).

I feel that Sword Art Online is the most over rated anime.
I'm not saying it's crap, because I enjoyed the first Half quite a bit.
But it gets so much praise from people a lot of which is does not deserve.
It's Not nearly as bad as haters say, but its not nearly as good as the Fanboys say it is.
SAO( first half) is a good show. SAO(Second Half) is just meh.

During the 90's the anime industry before NGE was at a pretty low point, a lot of shows were just rehashes of what was popular in the 80's and NGE was something very new, it shook the industry with it's psychological drama and its way of dismantling the Giant-robot theme( as in they are not robots at al) and its bizarre themes and imagery. Not only did it Revive the Mecha Genre it Revived the Industry and raised the bar for all shows that would come after it. It also was one the first big shows to break into NA anime industry. Too date it is still one of the most popular anime series in the world, especially with the rebuild series.

The problem is, is that peoples opinions are divided into 1) you Hate it or 2) you freaking love it.
the main reason i probably loved it was because the first time i saw it, was during my parents divorce so i was very very depressed. So characters who seemed helpless, quiet and just traumatized is exactly what i was looking for. There was no characters better then Shinji, Rei and Asuka. The show made me very happy after watching it.

If anyone says that there is a REALLY GOOD(MASTERPIECE) anime i'm going to say that i think is overrated just because i didn't like it? So your girlfriend/boyfriend is overrated too. I really don't think that there is an overrated anime, but i didn't like a lot animes that are popular if that is what you wanna know.

Well I thank you for taking my post serious and telling me legitimate reasons why the anime was so influential.

The thing I hate about the anime was how the writer tried to convey messages to the audience, there didn't seem to be any real faith. Some examples being Misato being proxy to Shinji's thoughts every time he went to test synchronizations, the various introspection monologues, and of course the last episodes. Instead of using actions to show emotions and feelings the writer just had, either through proxy or through direct means, the character say how they felt overtly. Now sometimes this is ok, but it shows better screenwriting ability to use actions rather than a long speech about how your nothing or whatever convoluted theme Hideaki was trying to get across.

The main thing I'm complaining about is almost cliche in anime. It's almost stereotypical for there to me way more TELL than show in the writing. There always seems to be a piccolo/kakashi character who broadcasts motivations/emotions/techniques that the writer thinks the audience needs dumbed down.

I guess I was more or so let down as to what I thought the anime COULD of been. But that is purely subjective, I saw all these monsters and lore and thought they would be used only to have them put on the backburner for what was IMO a sub-par psychological drama.

The real messages were underlined in the dialogue, beneath the words if you will. You were expecting more from it than it was (clearly proven to be a bad idea) and that is how you became disappointed. Now, a show that doesn't use those things you loathe so much (to a better extent) is Texhnolyze - a very quiet show. Think of it as one big drawn out wail of hopelessness and despair. Just to clarify (and I'll highlight it for you), but your wording confused me a little on some parts. If you could, could you reword it in a way that makes more sense? Basically make your reasons more clear (ie use better examples, etc.).

I'm suprised Elfen lied hasn't been mentioned yet, but if there ever was an overrated anime it would definitely be Elfen Lied.
