DNA changes aren't always beneficial- in fact they are often downright harmful in the short term. Human beings are only so successful because we have a high plasticity- which basically means that we adapt our environments and ourselves with artificial help (ie: coats in cold climates), so we don't have to rely nearly as much on natural selection (which takes tens of thousands of years). I predict that if we are able to "evolve" past the crudeness of natural selection, it will be through technology and transhumanism (cyborgs, uploading your consciousness to the Internet, etc).
