Depends on a number of factors. Dubs are easier on the eyes and concentration. Subs sometimes give a better feel for the content, emotional and otherwise. Subs sometime have irritatingly high and unnatural voices. Dubs sometimes just don't capture the character.

I've seen enough good dubs to tend to dismiss the ant-dub hate as a degree of hipsterism (I'm cooler than you because I watch the ORIGINAL show)

most of the time it's whatever I happen to watch first. Once a character's voice is 'set' for me I find it hard to watch in another format. That said I can think of a few anime where I've switched between dubs and subs....

... Overall all I'd say I come down slightly more on the side of Subs. or would if it weren't for all the anti-dub hipsters and my contrary streak.

I really don't see why preferring to hear a piece of media in its original language would make someone a 'hipster'. I'm a big fan of French comedies, but I never touch the dubs for those. I watch a lot of European horror movies, but I never watch the dubs for those either. I never watch Chinese movies with subtitles or dubbed voices.

The original lines and voice tracks will always have more 'soul' to them, because they were a part of the original production. So the actors and actresses that they picked were all picked for a reason (And if you know anything about seiyuu casting, they will often go through hundreds of auditions until they find the perfect voice. At least if they are looking for a newer voice, rather than someone who already has their roots in the industry.)

Great so you're the exception. Most people otherwise whom I've dealt with on this subject have resorted to the 'no true fan' fallacy. Or have tried to use their preferences as some sort of mark of superiority. If that's not hipsterism it will do until the real thing comes along.

Do you mean ugly as in vocal performance or ugly as in appearance?

Then you must hate a lot of things. Practically everything.

Ah, I see. You know, most voice actors now go to pronunciation schools to properly learn how to pronounce Japanese names and words. There are also multiple ways to pronounce certain words (and names).

For a second, I thought you meant all English voice actors were ugly and I just wanted to ask if that were true or not. If it was, I'd consider you to be an ass, but I'm glad that's not the case.

Why yes, yes I do.

What I was referring to though, is when dubbing companies change/alter/edit the show to make more "sense" to a western audience.

I.E- Removing scenes that they do not agree with, changing dialogue, censoring content.

Look at Nausicca of the wind vs. the shitty dub "Warriors of the wind" which was so poorly cut and chopped it's almost a different film.

By all means though, you can believe I hate everything, that's perfectly fine.

If the anime has dubs available then i'll always watch it with dubs. If not then it doesn't really bother me watching it with subs.

Well it is a translation into a different language. What you're talking about (removing scenes, censoring content, editing scenes) is primarily 4kids - which is a channel for, you know, kids. Warriors of the Wind was in the 1980's, come on, that's not fair. Technically, it was a different film, heavily edited to aim a children audience. Nausicaa was redubbed uncut in 2005, use that one for comparison instead.

I don't believe you hate everything, that was an unnecessary comment. You just said edited content of any nature, be more specific.

Rightly so, at the end of the day it's all about the anime. Change how it was originally as in a translation into a new language or editing out scenes? There's a big difference there. Subtitles aren't a 100% translation either, though I'm sure you already know that and I'm wasting my time by talking about it.

Let's just drop it. Forget I said anything.

Growing up on dubs I definitely love a really good dubbed anime but I have an appreciation for subs as well. Sometimes I like to just sit back and watch an anime to it's fullest without having to read text but I have become accustomed to them at the same time. There is rarely any good dubs anymore though so at this point of time I definitely like sub over dub.
