Cowboy Bebop did it right, and a small handful of others imo. Otherwise I cannot stand dubs. Dubs leave out a lot of dialog simply to make sure it matches up with the mouth of the character. I feel like even if they didn't butcher the dialog, I'd still hate missing out on honorifics and such. You miss out on a character teasing another by giving them a certain honorific. I dunno, I enjoy small details like that, and missing out on it isn't for me. If others enjoy it, more power to them. I'm not one to slam others for their preferences.

Also, you don't have to be fluent in a language to hear the emotions in someone's voice Why do people assume that because you can't fluently speak a language then you can't HEAR how they sound? jfc. You think cause someone can't understand English, they don't understand someone SOUNDS upset?

Yea imo only a handful did dubs justice. The lack of proper emotion compared to original and unfitting character voices drive me insane. I also hate when they recycle the VA's and you hear them in almost every anime dub lol

Since I plan to lean Japanese, I prefer the sub version. I like the dub, but for me is more beneficial to watch anime with subtitles. I love Japanese and when I watch anime, it always has to be SUB, or I'm not going to watch it. Also, because I prefer the original version.

Depends on my opinion if I like the voice, like for example I rather have Bleach, One Piece and Soul Eater Dub because the voices are fine on my opinion. (Including the voices for the group Espada ) As for other anime like :Fairy Tail and Naruto, somehow the voices can really tick me off. Sometimes I watch Naruto Dub and Fairy Tail Dub(Unilt 101 Fairy Tail) episode for but the problem they mess up some of the voices like Hidan voice souned like an old man and he is just 22 year-old and after epsiode 101 of Fairy Tail, they changed Master Master Makarov into a Russian-Accent which is am not happy about and Gajeel's voice is slightly annoying at some of the times. Is not that I hate or like the anime, it's just they got the voices wrong!

Generally whichever I watch first, though if there's something I don't like about the voices in one version, I'll switch over.

I like either. Dubs nowadays can go either way (though they used to be terrible until Cowboy Bebop). If there is something wrong with a post-Bebop dub, then there are probably more problems with the anime as well then just a bad dub.

I think it depends which one i see first. so far the sub animes i like are Hitman Reborn, Atttack on titian, Naruto. There are too many to name lol. but the dubs i like are Cowboy bebop, Samurai Champloo, Gundam wing, death note etc. Now once i watch a dub or the sub first i stick to it. I cant switch from dub to sub each ep tho

When I first started watching anime I wouldn't watch anything that wasn't dubbed. Then I realized how much I was limiting myself and I started to watch more and more subbed anime and now I really don't watch any dubbed anime except for Cowboy bebop on Adult Swim .

Subbed. The Japanese voice actors are more skilled, probably a result of the business being far more serious there. Our skilled English voice actors are only used on high-budget and high-profile animations. When I was watching Up I noticed how skilled the voice actors were. So the issue is that anime voice actors that dub are not as skilled, because the profession here is not taken as serious (i.e. they don't make nearly enough and they don't get the support their Japanese counterparts do).

Please keep in mind, that I am not denouncing dubs or speaking ill of dub voice actors.

It's funny how the people who don't like dubs are the ones who have only seen a couple of bad ones then use that as reference for all dubs.
Also this has a pretty good points on dubbed anime : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IyItqjCAag

It's not that keep in mind that most Japanese voice actors have been doing this for decades while most English VAs haven't even had half the experience, you don't have to be born Japanese to be a good voice actor.

Also all you guys who use the excuse "they don't sound the same" or "they don't fit the character", remember that the English voice actors are still ACTORS not IMITATORS, they are there to give their own take on the character for better or for worse but most of the time nowadays they do a good job.

I prefer subbed anime. Sometimes, it is VERY ANNOYING when they talk too fast when you have to read subtitles.
However, when you watch dubbed, things get lost in translation. Even jokes.
Take kuroshitsuji.

Sebastien says a phrase, in English it's, "I'm one Hell of a butler."
Which doesn't really make sense because back in that time period, you can't publicly swear. ESPECIALLY if you are nothing more than the hired help.

In Japanese he says a phrase that has TWO different meanings in Japanese. The proper translation is, "I am a butler for life."
However, when he pronounces, IN JAPANESE the words are also, "I am a demon and a butler."

One GOOD thing about fan subs is that fans would explain the joke, early on. He is saying two things simultaneously, "I am a butler for life."
And "I am a demon and a butler." Which, quite frankly, is funnier than "I am one Hell of a butler."

Publicly saying, "I am one Hell of a butler" sounds arrogant, and it doesn't suit Sebastien somehow. But, "I am a butler for life." Has more of that Japanese modesty. The fact that he's also is saying, "I am a demon and a butler" adds to the humor.

I know I am probably over-analyzing. But my point is, when things get translated. Things get lost in translation. When things are properly translated. Esp. when people put out the extra effort to explain the joke. It comes off as very enjoyable.

But jokes aren't funny when they have to be explained especially when it's slapped on the screen explaining why it's funny
