I'll watch both. If I have the option, I tend to try and watch the English dub first, but if the English is unsatisfactory, I'll switch to Japanese.

However, I never try to watch films from Makoto Shinkai in English... ever. Voices of a Distant Star was terrible in English, Place Promised was likewise awful, and 5 CM Per Second was the last time that I would ever give one of the English dubs from his films a chance.

I do admit that there is some anime that I've never watched in anything other than English for one reason or another. For example, FLCL just wouldn't be the same in any other language but English to me. My preferred method of watching Sailormoon is with the original English VAs. And in shows like Hellsing and R.O.D. OVA, an English dub fits the setting better, and Azumanga isn't Azumanga to me in any other language than English.

That being said, Madoka Magica, while having a perfectly good English dub is, in my opinion, much, much better in Japanese. Clannad wouldn't have had the impact that it did on me if I had tried to slog through the English dub. The same sentiment goes for Gurren Lagann as well.

It really just depends.

I prefer both. I started young on subs, so the reading never bothered me. The ONLY time I actually straight up preferred subs was during the original Sailor Moon S season, Usagi's English voice was so damn ugly I couldn't stand to watch it a minuet longer in English.

Subs. Dubs usually feel unnatural and weird to me and after having endured terrible dubs during my childhood, I'm scared of hearing anything with dubs.

Dubs. If I wanted to read, I'd pick up a manga.

Dubs. I'm not a fan of having to read it and watch it at the same time.

I prefer subs. A lot of things tend to get lost in translation when dubs are involved, some details are left out or the emotions are wrong. That, and I always cringe or burst out laughing whenever I hear english voice acting. Bad, bad, bad. There are probably two that I managed to watch dubbed without completely losing it.

subs because i don't have trouble reading, and because it more closely follows the original dialogue
though sometimes subs also butcher the dialogue for the lulz

I use to prefer dub, but lately all I watch is sub. I have a few on dvd that I try to watch in dub now and the voices just don't seem to be right. I guess I prefer sub unless the dub is absolutely phenomenal.

I think there is a lot of factors that go into preference. Personally, I like subs because its almost like reading a book, it leaves more to the imagination.

Acting is usually the main reason, fans have bias over what kind of attitude a character should have, and not all voices will suit this.

Translation - I like subs because I feel there are certain japanese phrases that can interpreted several ways in english

Rewriting usually affects the dubs a lot for me. It must be hard to translate japanese to english while phrasing the scenes to match the animated mouths!

sub, definitely, the dubbed anime have horribly flat voice overs, its like the actors don't even try, and the script is usually completely changed .

Sub
(in my opinion) I really think that eng dub well I think they either don't put a lot into the voice or that they over exaggerate the voice. Plus dub sounds weird to me
