G-Anime from Gatineau, Quebec on January 26-27 at http://ganime.ca/2013/en
The first convention of 2013 was also a new one to travel to in Gatineau. For a 2 day, 2 show weekend for The 404s Comedy Troupe, who are kicking off their 10th anniversary, it was quite an experience with about 100 fans at the first show, and a bit less at the Sunday finale, but it was one of the more creative crowds for suggestions, especially for games like Emotional Roller Coaster where they must have read a thesaurus or are simply very well educated French folk cultured in the fine arts. Way to go Gatineau, as they had a few thousand present each day at the convention, topping over the 3000 mark!
The shows had a lot of unique scenes, from the Emotional Roller Coaster to explain the anime Gurren Lagann, to finding love and anger with Emotional Objects of a giant sword, Pokeball and plushie. Oprah Winfrey got her own one word story about being fed stories about becoming Unicorns. We make due with our Living Scenery prop audience members to deal with first aid situations and sling-shooting against zombies in a gun-less Call of Duty game, and sound effects that had an ironic crow show up a lot to help find the Backstreet Boys. Thievery isn’t easy either when it came to Hey You down There, where the PSA was about how to rob a next door IKEA. Being in a bilingual community there were many instances of translation from Dub vs. Sub that went from English to French to Japanese to try to explain the horrible anime Cuticle Detective Inabi, to a Foreign Film Dub about Harry Potter. There were Press Conferences for PSY letting the dogs out to a Green Screen report to deal with the arrival of the Power Rangers. There were some great scenes of Cyrano wooing and climbing mountains with glass gloves to bungee jump in Japan.
The fans got to participate a ton like at all shows. Some came on to participate in a Questions Only Session. Others were our Pillars for lines, though I still got maybe the worst Australian accent for scenes like hunting in the Outback, but it’s at least good for the laughs with the suggestions! There was also use of fans for Dead Bodies. A scene went Forward and in Reverse while the Dating Game went straight forward with Professor Farnsworth from Futurama, Professor Oak from Pokémon and a tsundere trying to win love. This creatively thinking crowd made for some fun shows on the weekend.
The convention had much to offer. I got to participate with writer Marie Bilodeau and the voice of Sailor Moon and many other characters in Terri Hawkes in a game called Skeletons in the Closet. I got to spin someone else’s secret in licking celebrity eyebrows, and later on explained my real skeleton in the closet about figure skating as a child when I really wanted to be a hockey player. Going around the convention they had a great gaming room where there were many board games (some giant versions like Connect 4), video games on both consoles and arcade machines (the fact there was Sunsetriders made me very happy to play one of my favourite old time arcade games because the SEGA Genesis version I own has a lot of missing features and no 4 player mode like the arcade had) and card games (I got in a few Magic the Gathering games on the weekend). From morning Karaoke to seeing some great singing events and G-Idol, I had a lovely weekend on this new road trip.
I of course also made my trip to the dealer’s room. Here was this trip’s Bounty of finds:
-Another hard to find NIS game in Makai Kingdom for the PS2
-My Neighbour Totoro on a 2 disk DVD-After looking for a while I finally found a copy! Oh ho ho!
-Some Fan-made Stickers of Spawn, Chi from Chobits, Baby Beel from Beelzebub and Panty from Panty and Stocking
-I also got various things for CCGs I play, from splitting on a Hieratic Sun Dragon Overlord of Heliopolis tin to a Pokémon Black and White Dragon Vault booster set
-Some Orange Soda Hi-Chew
-I also had a lot of “Fantasies des Fraises (Strawberry Paradise)” fruit smoothies from the Jugo Juice special coupons included with the Programming Book among others in the food court located just downstairs from the Palais des Congres where the convention was held
-A Chi the cat double sided image keychain from Chi’s Sweet Home from an artist
