If you're "whatever" goes too much beyond a fifth you might run out of a dating pool entirely. The chances that you are 10th cousins with everybody of an ethnic group you belong to are pretty high. I think its something like the range of 16th cousins where you have a good chance to be related at that level to nearly every human being on the planet.

I don't even know who most of my Great Uncles/Aunts were, let alone who my third cousins are. I met a few of my MANY second cousins at a family reunion once when I was about 7 or 8, but I couldn't recognize them now nor do I remember their names. So if I dated a third cousin, I probably wouldn't even know it unless someone did a rather extensive genealogy project. And if I did know, it wouldn't bother me. Studies have shown no statistically significant increase in birth defects of children born of cousin-parents than of unrelated parents (I'm assuming that is provided that this does not occur over multiple generations. It is better to have a family tree than a family bush). I think first cousins would be a little much for me, but outside that, it is all fair game. Besides, go back far enough and most of us are related.
