I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks he might just be a little* off base.

I think everyone is racist in their own way. I don't think there is a single person ever in existence who hasn't thought something racist in their life. Especially during war time for example, saying you've never thought something racist is just hypocrisy.

Sure, but racism can never be justified. Just because everybody does it, it's okay?

Yeah, I think racist thoughts, even about my own people, but I tell the jokes to people I know appreciate them. Otherwise I keep quiet and stay as respectful as possible. Its called decorum.

Racist people never think what they do is racist. Look at the '50s and '60s and even before for blacks in America. I'm not saying racism is gone now. I'm just pointing to that time period b/c it's the only period everyone seems to agree on as far as racism existing. Now instead of things being racist the offended group is just 'too sensitive'. People can be as racist as they want. But they're still going to get called out on it. Just as they did back then. So stop trying to use 'freedom of speech' to hush people. You're not exempt from a response. As someone said, a lot of things were acceptable until we stopped accepting it.

It is a shame some are so insecure they have to put others down to feel good about themselves. IMO freedom of speech comes with responsibility of speech.

wrt to everyone being racist....

So what?

Just because China and Japan are racist (and they are) doesn't mean that it is okay to be racist against Asians.

Racism is asinine, doesn't matter who's doing it to who... A lot of racism and racist stereotyping is born from the crap like this party; a classic case of the noisy few giving a bad impression that lumps the silent many with them. Personally, I only care for the individual, I couldn't give two shits for better or worse about where they come from.

If you're asian you should be offended. Black people went a long way to ensure equal rights in public society and also in legal areas such as voting, school, & segregation. What they did not accomplish, however, is ending ignorance.

Everyone will agree that society still has a huge population of ignorant people. Especially in American society. In the society that we are forced to grow up in racist is apart of the white noise that surrounds everything that we do and everyone that we come in contact with. It's ingrained in "mother culture."

If you're asian you should be offended, and you should raise your voice and let it be known that this type of activity is what it is - it's racist. However, as so many people have already pointed out, there is no "hate" in the context of this particular display, but that doesn't mean that it's not racist. What we are seeing here is a shift in the thought patterns of our generation.

Here's a little story that I'd like to tell (it's short, don't worry). One day I told my sister about my rice cooker & how everything I had been eating around that time I had been serving over rice. What she said what, "Oh, my little brother eats just like a gook." When she said that, she used a tone inflecting "cuteness" and humor, but I told her that it wasn't cool & so she then said, "Well, Uncle So & So talks like that" (like that would make it okay). So I told her that we live in a different time now & our uncles went through very different experiences having been through the Korean War & Vietnam (positive about their having been to Korean War, not sure if those uncles in particular had been to Vietnam).

So you see, it isn't that much long ago that racist was used in conjunction with hate crimes. Today it's a shift towards something that's meant to be friendly, but it's used in that manner by people who have never had to go through experiencing hate crimes against them or anyone that they loved.

In closing, I want to say that if we want these patterns to cease then we need to teach our children how to love one another. Not just their siblings, either, I mean how to love all the people that they meet and they will meet as they grow up & move on through their lives. Teach your children, & back it up by showing them how to carry out those good teachings.

One of the things that I was thinking about after I got up away from my computer was that it wasn't anything hate driven. It was incredibly ignorant & stupid and incredibly disrespectful, but it wasn't a burning cross. It wasn't a bunch of slaveowners or people telling you that you couldn't speak your language & then washing your mouth out with soap when you did - those things are pure hatred. Pure evil. It is telling someone that, respectively, they're subhuman & not worthy of human treatment and it's people completely and deliberately another group of people for annihilation. Purposely targetting other people in order to extinguish their identity.

You see, these things still exist in our collective consciousness. I believe people tend to forget about things in the past & fail to realize that those types of inhumanities did not occur that far into the past and that, if we're not mindful, we can still devolve into monsters (either collectively or, more commonly, singularly).

Respect must be paid to the past & people have to realize that the people we are surrounded by now are not the same perpetrators of the past. Same skin color, but the hearts & minds are different. In the same respect, we should remember the past & treat people the way they ought to be treated in an effort to create a better tomorrow for the sake of future generations.

Also, maybe forgive them for being idiots. Show them asian people aren't cool just because they have awesome anime & tasty chocolate dipped pretzels.

You know whats funny? I constantly see Asian shows stereotyping and criticizing western culture. But I don't get mad and call them racist.

Take the anime Code Geass for example. This is basically a sci-fi retelling of when the USA occupied Japan. They're basically saying we're evil and had an unfair advantage because of demon tech created by Satan. (exaggeration but whatever)

That may not be the best example. But countless Asian media constantly insults westerners.

If this party is to be condemned for being racist... (which it is) Then perhaps westerners should condemn all Asians for wearing western style clothing EVERYDAY. And speaking poor English on TV.
Dam white people using chinese-made iphones and abusing the Japanese language.
