Higurashi or Umineko?
|
Both Higurashi When they cry and Umineko Naku Koro Ni are from 07th Expansion. I'm curious about which is better, which is wost, which is more gruesome and so forth.

Higurashi is more psychologically disturbing than Umineko.
Umineko makes you think more than Higurashi. Both are very bloody. Both have good stories. As far as I know, they both take place in the same world. And they are both extremely badass. Watch them both, starting with Higurashi, then Higurashi Kai, Higurashi Rei (which is an OVA series) and lastly Umineko. That's how I did it, and I felt like Umineko was kind of rushing into the puzzles and critical thinking. Higurashi warms you up for that. It's longer and takes it a bit more slowly than Umineko did. Either way, the more that you like to think critically, the more you'll enjoy these series. |

It is if you buy the Blu Ray edition that released in early December by NISA, which I highly recommend. As to which is better, that is a really tough call to make, but I think I might give the edge to Umineko. I just felt that watching that, I had to think a little bit more, plus I really love how it was set up in a murder mystery fashion. Both are terrific series, but I really wish a studio would pick up Umineko and finish the series as it gets really good, love the visual novel. |

I like Higurashi more with regards to the anime. Mainly because the full story is told there. You only get half of the Umineko story in the anime. I'm pretty sure the Umineko anime only covers the first four out of eight arcs of the visual novels although I can't be sure since I've only gotten to watch the first two arcs worth of the anime) . As far as which work as a whole I like better not limited to the anime portion, that would have to be Umineko. Higurashi feels better for most people though as all the questions are answered by the end of it. Umineko on the other hand theoretically gives you all the information you need to figure things out by the end but doesn't outright tell you although there are different theories held by the fandom.
The anime for Higurashi is far more gruesome in my opinion as you see a lot of death first hand. Umineko is a murder mystery and you don't always get to see things as they happen, and there is a lot of metaphor for things you do see. I personally think Umineko's story is a lot more intriguing, as well as tragic, but Higurashi's is easier to understand at least after things get spelled out for you. And yeah they are in the same world. I think there are some kind of spoilers in Umineko with regards to Higurashi, but you probably wouldn't pick up on them unless you know what to look for. Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide Basically unless you realize that Bernkastel is the creepy eternal part of Rika you won't catch on to what she is referencing when she does with regards to Higurashi. I do like both of the works quite a bit though, so I'd give both a try. EDIT: derp meant to edit my post and quoted it instead. I'm a dumbass. |

Higurashi is better imo.
reason for that opinion: I still haven't managed to complete Umineko. I couldn't get into it, and I've watched passed ep 5. |
