Why can't Asian artists make it big in America?
|
ive thought about this too and i think its part marketing cause most americans dont listen to the type of music asian people listen to. maybe if it was the late 1990s then asian artists of today wouldve made it but now america's tastes have changed.
i know that jyp made a jyp usa in an attempt to debut korean artists in america like min gsoul and jlim but i think it will be really hard. oh and hes even thinking of having wondergirls debut in america as well, but i dont think americans will like the tell me dance as much. |

Ok, this might have been said already because I've just glanced over some of the posts, I am so not reading all 13 pages, but since I live in the USA I think I know why asian music and film aren't that big over here. I'm sure that if our music business thought it could get away with re-making asian music the way Hollywood re-makes asian horror films they would do it and it would be huge here. A lot of americans are lazy, they don't want to have to read sub-titles and they don't want to look up song translations. My friend and I have tried putting in a few sub-titled movies on for movie nights and we hear almost instant groans and people telling us to change it right after they see the first sub-title.
The facts are that the U.S. is huge and because of that most of us know we'll never have to travel to another country unless it's for vacation or something so we've become really stupid about accepting other languages and cultures. People in smaller countries are going to different countries all the time because it's only a car, train, or ferry ride away. They've grown up knowing how close the borders are and visiting other countries so they're more open to learning other cultures and at least enough of other languages to make themselves understood. Here, learning another language is for high school or college credit, but in smaller countries it's because you want to be understood and not make a complete ass of yourself. I also really don't think asian musicians should change so that they can be more acceptable here. The reason I went looking for other music is because most of our music is so bad right now, everyone sounds the same and the lyrics don't even seem to change any more. Most of our hip hop and rap scene consist of poseurs putting out song after song about how often they get laid and how. I can't even tell the difference between some of our rock groups anymore. It's like the record companies found 20 guys that sound exactly the same and put them in every band they had signed to their label. A lot of singers over here have no talent whatsoever. Our pop scene is huge because EVERYONE went pop. It's all about money and everyone decided that pop had the biggest audience and was acceptable to pretty much everyone. So now instead of a great rock or punk band we have mediocre pop punk and pop rock bands. America's new aim seems to be to get rid of music, films, ect. that don't have huge audiences and instead make mediocre products that will appeal to the majority in some way. |

I don't wanna say asian artist will never make it big in america, I think it'll just take sometime like it did with the latinos. Like someone said earlier it's really gonna take some big breakout artist to open the americans' eyes and ears to asian culture. Not to get all statistical and what not but Asians make up 1/4th of America along with whites, blacks, and middle easterners(gee is that even a word, lol). So yeah it's gonna happen. By the way I'm black and up until I found this website I only knew of artists like Se7en, BoA, 1tym, and Rain, now I listen to everything from Ai Otsuka to Morning Musume and so on. Heck I used to be scared to play my music around my family and friends outta fear they'd think something was wrong with me or maybe I was trying to be something that I'm not but now I'm like screw it I play it in front of them and tell to F. off if they don't like it. My point is americans are waaay to close minded to accept anything that's different but with people like Se7en and Rain preparing to make their U.S. debut hopefully that'll all change.

I think a Japanese artist will make it in America and really soon. With the internet, world cable channels, podcasts, anime endings and openings, etc a lot more people are being exposed to Japanese music and people are interested and they want to see their favorite artists in their own country. My money is on Crystal Kay to make it, she's already worked with Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis. English is also her first language and in my personal opinion I think she sounds better than a lot of the popular American artists that are out now.

And technically Ne-Yo's part Chinese so does he count? Ne-yo's part Chinese? I didn't know that Yeah like a quarter I think. oh I never knew that |

Personally I can't understand why Asian artists haven't made big here yet, I'm an American and I love Asian Music. But I guess it's just that most Americans must be afraid to like something that is different, and new. They are so traditional and I guess are afraid of change, that mentality really sucks because they can be really close minded.

well.. coz they got their own pool of talents in their country that's about as or even greater than the asian artists?? Don't think it's a matter of race. It's just what makes sense..
The 'big' mainstream artists makes it to their spot for a reason u know? They have either the looks, voice, moves, or in some cases all of it. Not to say that the asian ones don't. But in all honesty, the american artists are really good. They just have better quality in what they have to offer than the asian artists. Even assuming that their talent is on par or greater even, than the mainstream American artist. The market and target audience will favor what they are familiar with more. Which means it leaves the asian artists that was born there to achieve the superstar status. Coz they 'get' the culture. They know how to market their product with the target audience. Problem is.. asians that 'gets' the culture and have reall talent that goes with it are a minority. And what's worse is that, to land a contract deal you'll either have to be lucky or connected. You get where i'm going with this? It's a game of chances. And statistically it doesn't look so good. |

Utada debuted here but failed. BI was supposed to but... I dont know WHAT the hell happened to that O.o SE7VEN was supposed to too.... Who knows thats going on with those two XD
Anyway, I think America's just racist. Our artists are huge in Japan but... not the other way around because America's racist. I was actually talking to my grandpa about it XD He was like "It's probably because of WWII and the other stuff. America's afraid of us asians!" lol I actually find it too. However, their music wont sell if it's not in English. Like someone said before (I don't remember what page it was or... what. I'm too lazy =.=) it's because asian music is different. America doesn't like "different" things. Hell look whats going on right now with the whole ressesion fears and... stuff. They don't like change! Like, when celebrites go and do something different, it causes an uproar =.=, for the good or for the bad.... Bottom line, America is just stupid. But yet again... haha I know a lot of people who would get PISSED if asian music became mainstream XD!!!!! Buuut... that's a different story O.o |

pperhaps people are forgeting that these are two different countries we are talking about with different cultures, styles, trends, norms....even trends inside of countries are different from other parts/sides of the same country...
you guys are making it sound like just because not all americans like the music we like to listen to, that they are being racist... then we have people on here saying american music sucks and that they dont like listening to it... doesnt make since to me sounds like it goes both ways....just accept the fact that not every body likes the same things... |
