Why can't Asian artists make it big in America?

umm, it might be because no one had tried to become an artist here yet. But you will never know, there might be an asian artist later this year or so =P

A lot of good points....sure Rain, Utada, and others have tried or are still trying to debut out here, but they are being rejected. Asian artists have to keep trying. I have hope! Streotyping is part of the reason why. In America, Asians are seen owning Beauty Supplies, Nail Shops, Dry Cleaners, etc. Asian kids at school are always seen as good math and science students. Career wise, you see Doctors, Computer Technitions among other high-paying positions. The whole seclution thing where not only Asians but, Black, Hispanics, and all the other minorities stay in their own collective groups, only associating with themselves is another reason. Third, of course language barrier(s) is a problem. Americans ARE NOT the people you'd think they are to be understanding about this, they are rude, especially with this whole imirgiration thing (Spelling again!
). Still, I think America is ready for it...I just don't think the record companies, movie producers and other rich, sucessful people are. I'm just repeating information, but people aren't understanding the real reason why they're not making it here. Reason(s): If you're a foreign artist trying to make it big in America, you have to work with American Producers. "You have to listen to the high and mighty King because SHE KNOWS BEST..." seriously ! American Producers here think if you don't listen and follow their lead, you're not going to make it. They'll make sure of it too. They made an example out of Utada. " YOU NEED US!!!" Kind of thing. Then again, all these American-owned businesses think like that and pitch that speech the first time they negociate with other countries. (Again, not all Americans are like this, it's just the American Ideology(ies) that have been shoved into our memory every since we were born from our media.)Take Utada. Her english album was so good, but because she didn't let the producers take complete control over the whole album, it flopped. I guess that's why the producers were depending on Timberland, even if he only produced three tracks on it, those singles weren't released as singles here. There wasn't no advertisement except, MTV's "You Hear It First" which is surprising since she was on Def Jam Island and about ten years ago, she had a song on the first Rush Hour Movie Soundtrack and another album before that. On top of that, she was born in N.Y. and she's bilingual!!! More importantly she was born and raised here...well until she was 13. You get the point!!!! Rain is having the same issues too. When the news came that Utada wasn't doing well, his music label went to the U.S. and tried to get help from Diddy and other record labels that have R&B/Rap Artists. Now that I'm typing this, SE7EN's did too. BoA's producer was like (paraphrasing), "Whatever. She's not going to the U.S. She's going to debut in China and China will become the U.S." This is sad news too since she wants to perform here. I guess that's why her record label comes here a couple times a year and recruit Asians to bring back, train and debut them in Korea, Japan or China. It's sad! People around the world like our music artists, accepts and respect them, so why can't my country do the same??!!! The U.S. needs to get it together! It's dirty how my country claims it celebrates diversity and everybody's equal, but they fully don't. |

Well where I live if it's not country or "gangsta-in-da-club" type rap, it's non-existent. I think it's just the culture. Which is a total shame because I find my self listening to about 80% Asian music. It doesn't feel as cookie-cutter as most main-stream American artists.
But hey, different trends cycle. Let's hope soon we can get some Asian music to catch on over here! *Oh America you don't know what your missing!* |

It's gonna be hard: (nearly impossible)
1) The world pop culture right now is geared towards US music and some from Europe. During our generation, I doubt Asian music will make it unless something drastic happens. 2) The marketing strategy in Asia are very different from the States. While the images that are portrayed by music stars in Asia look appealing to Asians, it isn't to people in the States. 3) The appearance of singers to the eyes of people in the States. Asian looks aren't really at an advantage in our generation. Maybe in a few more years or decades. Who knows? Females have way more popularity, however; So, I think if an Asian singer makes it, it will probably be a female singer. Unless an Asian singer speaks fluent English and writes/performs some very artistic/soulful music. Not typical Asian ballads or pop. 4) There's just way too much competition in the States. It sucks to say but Americans tend to have an advantage in learning and gaining musical experience since so many musicians and cultures live in the States. A singer in Korea is confined to that of Korea. Not to mention that almost all Korean singer that makes it big in Korea is basically owned by their label. Not like singers in the States. |
