Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide I tried to look into the theory of ferrofluids once, I rapidly learned that my solid state physics is nowhere near good enough and gave up! Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide mhibicke wrote: Great thread! ![]() The expression of the α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7 nAChR) in the hippocampus of a newborn rat pup. Imaged with receptor autoradiography using receptor-specific ligand α-bugarotoxin labeled with iodine 125. The bad ass snake that produces the neurotoxic venom for the ligand. Don't fuck with this guy. A couple pretty models of the receptor that show it to be a pentameric ligand-gated ion channel. A pathway diagram linking the α7 nAChR to some oncogenes and supporting my claim in a different thread that everything modulates (or is modulated by) RAS. This is one you might be interested in: ![]() Its a non-linear oscillating chemical reaction. Theres nothing moving in that petri-dish, noones sturred it or messed with it in any way. You just take some chemicals and plonk it in the dish and it does strange things like that. Effectively you take some weird chemical mix which has a feedback effect in it, Say you have like chemical A,B,C which can produce say A+B->X A+C->Y B+C->Z then you could have that X+Z->A+C, or any way for the system to feedback into itself, you end up with different parts of the medium having rapidly differing densities of each chemical type, the boundaries between these different 'phases' are not static and its what you see expanding in the liquid. The mathematics you use to model these is exactly the same as that used in morphogenesis which is the process that makes biological things take shape, IE what turns a bag of cells into a fetus shaped bag of cells |
