Too naturally. When i am told to write a short story, short means at least two pages when it only has to be a couple hundred words. Not only that but every story i think of could easily be a couple hundred page book. I tell people my ideas and daydreams and normal dreams and they are like; your going to be a writer, right? So many ideas, my only problem is that i am not patient enough to take the time to type it all out. That and the story moves along really fast in my head and my fingers can't keep up.

Well, I only recently got back into creative writing. So, I don't know how relevant my thoughts will be but whatever.

With out exception, I come up with all my stories, or the seed of a story, in bed. Sometimes a piece of media will start the process, but I am always in bed trying to fall asleep when it happens. The seed is usually a setting or character, or a collection of personality traits to be honest. Every once in awhile it's a bare bones plot.

From there, I just think about this setting or character. Aimless pondering really. I don't set any goals or limitations at this point. That's how I can go from "Kid with terminal illness" to "Suicidal teen metal head who resents his world." Nothing has been named at this point, put on paper, or finalized.

Once I feel really attached to the idea, or maybe just tired of such general thinking, I start to develop. Most of the times I have the characters ready at this point, besides names, so it's all plot. I suck at plot. Plot feels like it's plotting to kill me. (I'll show myself out.) Here is where I jump the gun and just start writing, half-assed plot and all. I am a better sculptor than painter. Painting a blank canvas is overwhelming for me, but manipulating a little clay? I can manage that. Did anyone but me follow that analogy?

With this half-assed story written, I'll do one round of edits and revisions then put it away. Write something else. The time allows me to gather perspective and see flaws that my attachment would otherwise obscure.

Keep in mind this is all from someone who has only returned to writing 9 months ago and has no formal teaching at all. It is a clunky process that results in not so well written things.

It's worth noting that the task of writing itself, getting words on paper/screen, is relatively simple for me. It surges then goes dead. Surges, then goes dead. 200 words one day, 3,000 the next, nothing for the next three days. But I never find it hard, so much as just unnatural at times. Like running when you haven't stretched enough. You can do the motions but something feels off, and in the end the entire exercise was made useless.

Not sure if that was even remotely interesting or helpful. I doubt it was, but more information is never bad. But please, anyone reading this, take as a "What Not to Do" more so than a "How to"

The best advice I have ever received on this is actually from Stephen King. Write 2,500 words a day. If you can't get to 2,500 words a day, start small, maybe 100 words, but increase from there. But don't go back. EVER.

Your first few words, sentences, paragraphs will be utter drivel, I can guarantee it

But after a while, you will notice a huge improvement. Your ideas will come naturally, and you will start to flow. If you combine that with reading (lots of reading), you will notice a slow but steady improvement.

Writing is a journey, not an end in itself. Good luck!

....Hum..a lot of people here already gaved great advices.....true you need to read books or watch tv ect ,learning about storys and whats used can help you understand more about your own storys or how to make them or fancy give a little idea like Ria is a young girl of 15 who dreams to find true love ,one day she meets this boy named Akatsuki she felt her heart pound hard "Was this love?" yet she founds out hes homosexuel!and already has a boyfriend! ...thats the basic information you can then start building it up what well Ria do? what is going to happen with her impossible love? who are her friends and familly? what besides that happens in her life? ect ect...characters? names? personalitys??....mmmh yeah thats a sticker... lets say start by a simple idea this character is going to be...shy! simple thats a main form of his attitude! now...a name? what is his hair color? eye color? skin color? likings? lets say he has white hair and..blue eyes!! pale skin!hes sweet and charming nice to people and has a clear smile yet very shy ,timid. now thats the outside aspect what about inside? lets say he had a traumatizing childhood! but what happened?mmmh his father was abusive to his mother and the only thing he saw was her crying so he has a fear of seing woman cry!or he cant handle people who treat girls badly... lets say he has hidden powers from his ancestors..he may be someone nice but maybe provoked or reminded of something he gets crazy? or if mad anough he releases his power ? maybe theres someone who makes him feel better...a brother? a friend? lets say he likes sweets and soft things and despise meat in all ways or he hates men or EVEN MORE! you assemble ideas together! now give a name! you can give him a name that fits his personality or that you like..maybe a name capital for the story or that you made up! i'll call him... Yukimura Fubuki..... Which is mixture between snow and blizards two sides of his soul! now keep practising ,have fun and dont worry it does

No, I can come up with ideas and starts easy, but eventually I see way to many directions for the story to go.
Then I get bogged down because I cannot decide the best route and stop writing.

Yes direction with how I would like the story to go is a big one with me. I can have the characters but have no clue what to really do with them.

Isolate the best ideas and try each one of them out? Then, perhaps pinpointing which one will work the best for you and you could even incorporate previous ideas into that one base idea that you picked out.

Just a thought, food to chew over, etc.

Hm. Sometimes I'll get an idea and I'll start writing and it flows easy enough, but then I just get lazy and stop writing about that story. So beginnings are really easy for me. The rest of the story? Not so much.
