I think it has to be unified well. If it's badly written and hard to follow, it just kinda ruins the experience (says the NGE fan...). Unless it has a couple of decent characters, but even then, that's not enough to keep me watching. Character development is a huge one for me, but not forced - like some animes that just put random stuff that feels totally disconnected from the characters. Romance is also nice. Music is also huge for me, too. If the soundtrack is wonky then it can ruin the atmosphere.

Mostly it's the writing, though. Cheesy dialogue is forgivable, but it really depends.

I like when I can relate to the character. It makes me happy to know that there are people who think like my crazy mind PLUS it has to make laugh uncontrollable

There's so many genres to choose from and they're enjoyable. Most importantly, they let the imagination fly.

My personal favorite would have to be Samurai Champloo.
Unique story line, unique characters, excellent animation, a great mixture of humor and meaningfulness, lots of great music.

There are plenty of other examples out there, but this one takes the cake.

The majority of anime are fun but not all that much different from the cartoons on american TV. Like with american shows there is a pretty wide range from trash shows that sell toys to decent and fun adventures.

What sets anime apart for me are those shows you could never get out of the american animation industry. Not simply where the Anime industry is able to go above and beyond the american one in terms of maturity and story telling. I think those top level shows are great and I wish the American animation industry could bring itself to do similar stuff, but as much as I love those they aren't the thing that really sets anime apart for me personaly

It's the rare and subtle shows that I love most. Usagi Drop and Chihyafuru are examples of what I think Makes Anime Great. While the American animation industry is certainly capable of making good quality shows, even mature well written shows if it really tries (though it usually dose them as movies), it won't ever do something like Usagi Drop or Chihaya. The mentality just isn't there to create such simple and beautiful shows because to the people who control the industry art isn't viewed as marketable.

Either drama leading to tears or intense moments of fear for a character.

Different, new or interesting. Examples... Flower of Evil, Chihayafuru

I just don't like the animes that use a template... meaning the characters are just replica of other characters created numerous times before. Example, Majestic Prince. They have this perverted guy, and this perverted girl, and a nonchalant guy and girl... it's so boring... it's just using a template.

I like characters to be free and full of life and not predictable, as if you're watching a real person.

Combine Likeable characters(either good hearted or insane) and place them in a ridiculous plot. A plot thats ridiculous but still likable
