There's a lot of factors but story and characters is the main thing I look to. But I believe it boils down to having surpassing the expectations youve set for the anime. If you think it's good but it does something better, then that's a great anime for you.

I guess I like anime that's entertaining. I'm not a particularly cerebral person when it comes to anime, so I like to kick back and have fun with what I'm watching. That's not to say I don't enjoy serious shows, they can be fun too if they're thrilling or suspenseful. I just don't like overly dramatic shows, so more light-hearted or comedic fare is usually up my alley.

The usual: Plot, characters and interesting points.

To a lesser extent:
1) Inclusion of classical music. Examples: HxH 2011, Kill la Kill etc.
2) Variety of emotions incited. An anime that specializes in one area is good (like Ghost in the Shell), but anime that can make you laugh AND cry, get on the edge of your seat or just make you feel good would be ranked higher in my books.
3) Cinematic scenes: scenes that stick in your mind and make your jaw drop or get you all excited. Typically examples are great plot twists and amazingly beautiful graphics and sound.

1.) Great animation with color (unless is like a dark anime).
2.) Character development that makes sense.
3.) A good story that makes some sense.
4.) Unique

Let's see.

Characters. Characters that develop and are not static and unchanging. It's a plus to have characters that are likable and are able to carry the series because of their uniqueness. Generic and static are minuses. Developing and overbearing are the pluses.

Story/Plot. Needs to be enthralling, it needs to make me want to watch it, and ultimately it NEEDS a plot. If the show can be seen in any order (assuming you have knowledge of who the characters are) then the show can never exceed good in my eyes. Being predictable is also a huge minus. Plot twists are the way to go.

Ending/Resolution. Needs to have a great well executed and planned out ending. If it's something that leaves plot holes or answered questions or isn't even remotely an ending, then that's just boring. It needs to wrap up everything and leave "contentment" if you know there's nothing more to come.

Enjoyment. Duh. What do I need to say about this.

Astounding Impact. It needs to do something that makes it branch off from regular anime in its genre. Whether it has an amazing plot twist that makes you redefine your reality, it presents themes that are never present in anime, it does something that makes you delve into more shows that have a similar premise, it gave you a void, or it affected you in such a way that you won't simply forget it.

  • Give me no room to complain about anything.
  • Show me something I feel like I'll never see again.
