I have recently been thinking about purchasing membership for crunchyroll but was curious to who does the subs. Does crunchyroll sub the shows or are they provided? I did search around but struggled to find a answer to I am sorry if this has already been asked. Thanks.

Most of the time Crunchyroll subtitles the series that it simulcasts(so they do it themselves using in many cases, former fansubbers). For catalog titles if they are provided from a North American company, they basically use the subs given. I believe that the Naruto simulcasts use the subs that Viz Media provides. I hope this answer helps.

This is what I have gathered over time reading the forums.

It depends on the show.

Aniplex provides the subtitles for their series, so Crunchyroll does not have to hire anyone to sub the Aniplex shows. You will notice that Aniplex titles that are also streamed on ANN and Hulu have the same exact subtitles and use the same font, because Aniplex subbed the show.

For the shows that Crunchyroll does the subbing on, they contract out to various people. Crunchyroll is given the script from the anime studios before the show airs, which allows time for the contracted translators/editors/timers/ect... to finish the subtitles and have them ready in time for the show to be simulcasted.

As mentioned above, many of the people who are contracted by CR to provide the subtitles have also worked in fan subbing groups in the past.
