According to to a friend of mine, (whose dad is a history buff) the Spartan warriors all fought as a group but when separated they fought in pairs (like boyfriends protecting each other). They each had a specific partner that they protected and actually had sex with Also it was actually something that was encouraged for them to do because it would create a greater bond between the two.

O.0 True right? What do you think about this? You think it's true? I guess they didn't show it in the 300 movie because it would freak people out I guess. But Brokeback Mountain is an exception I guess. -__-'

even if that was true, if they were anything like the movie, they were still totally manly.

yup, in today's terms, they would be bi-sexuals
before the whole christian/catholic era..
being gay or loving a man was pretty normal
no one felt wrong about having love for someone of the same gender.
but ofcourse, they all liked women also.. so they married women because they knew men could not bear children.

but why is this a surprise? lol

I don't know why you should make such a big deal out of this (not that I'm disregarding your topic, since many might not be open to the thought of it).

Heck, male homosexuality was rampant during that time, because the Greek Philosophers saw it as a sort of "higher" love as opposed to the earthly love between Man and Women.

The spartans might have had a different interpretation, but this method of war was not to be found by the spartans alone. Even some samurai practiced this form of "love pairing" because it fostered a sort of "i'll look out for you" in the battle field (a good way to increase defense in smaller units). Unfortunately, for the samurai, if your partner died, you'd have to commit hara kiri (which was usually done without hesitation anyway since they literally loved their partners).

It was history... get used to it.

Like ed said, homosexuality was actually promoted because the relationship was considered to be more kindred. Back in ancient society, stratification on gender pretty much separated women and men from similar experiences. Although women were given rights equal to them, their main role in society was a child bearer and house attendant rather than the male jobs in politics and manual labor. Thus, men found tend to find a stronger bond between other men since they were equals and could relate to each other more easily. It's nothing new in ancient society at all.

heroes.. yeah.
but come on. those guys had so many advantages..a small path way, stronger armor, yearly practice of warfare
but mostly because of the Athenian navy(the real unsung heroes)
the navy basically protected their 300 asses from getting stomped by the transport ships
