I wonder why they make some characters look distinguishably Asian while they make others look like the typical anime character with big eyes, a small pointy nose and a sharp pointy chin.

Because Asians have small eyes.

Not all Asians do. It looks like you have not come across that many Asians. If you look at South East Asians, many of them have large eyes.

If they wanted "Asian" features, they could just watch live action shows.

Sorry to say, where I live it is infested my mexicans, not asians.

It's called art /drawing style...

It's all aesthetics based on what the artist feels would suit the character best. I think you're trying to read too much into it by using racial stereotypes to categorize 2D drawings...

The reason why some do and some do not is because some animation bothers and some does not. It's cheaper and easier to animate few features, many animes have many characters with the exact same face because it's just simpler.
They don't lack Asian features, they lack features entirely. And that's okay, because Japanese will perceive them as Japanese anyway, the same way we perceive our cartoon characters as American unless otherwise stated.

This was posted on CR about a year ago, and I think it probably states it the best:

http://kotaku.com/5627268/why-do-japanese-characters-look-white

What nationality is this person?

A white person will probably see it as white, a japanese as japanese, etc. Because I'm American, I default to thinking of the person in the picture as similar to me. A japanese will probably see it as japanese. To make it a girl, I add a dress. If I want to make the person look american to me the job is already done. If I want it to look japanese, then I add "japanese" features. If I'm japanese, and I want to make the picture look japanese, then it's already done -- it looks like a "japanese" person to me. However if I want to draw an american, then I'll add blonde hair, or a hamburger, or whatever -- you'll see this in anime, and if you notice, chinese in anime are typically depicted with the slanted eyes, because to the Japanese, Chinese have slanted eyes, while theirs are "normal." Most people think of themselves as normal, and only include the stereotypical features when drawing characters that are unlike themselves.

Kotaku explains it much better than I can though, I just thought I'd give a TL:DR.

I am loving the stick figure explanation! Seriously, that made sense immediately.

I see anime characters as neutral in appearance, mixed, or have a specific appearance.

I think it's because the artstyle of anime (basically the bigger eyes, cartoony features) are based on Disney cartoons from way back. Now it's evolved into anime, but it still stems from that cartoon look.

However...

I do sometimes think it is also because they just LIKE large eyes since they don't have non-Asian eyes. Not saying this to be mean or anything, but basing this on some blogs written by non-Asians AND Asians alike. And come on...non-Asian features are popular in Asia.

What cracks me up though, if you see a non-Japanese in an anime, they usually will be drawn more "Asain" - smaller eyes/dark eyes, black hair. Like, a Chinese person or something. I think that stems more from racial tensions between Japanese and non-Japanese Asians but that is another story.

Again though, I do sometimes find it annoying how non-Asians are portrayed. For instance in the awesome manga Banana Fish, the story takes places n 80's gang filled America.

There are lot of black characters, and they are drawn with African hair, thicker lips, etc. They are Japanese characters as well, but they are drawn like anime characters with bigger eyes and non-Asian features. I mean...Come on. If you can draw black characters and make them look typically African, then you can also draw Asian characters and make them look Asian! Otherwise it is not fair.

Or like for instance, an Indian character. They always make them dark skinned, with dark hair/eyes. Now, a lot of Indians have these features, and yet, a lot of Indians have light skin, colored eyes and non-black hair as well. Just like how some Asians (Cabodians, Vietnamese) have larger eyes, darker skin.

And not all Europeans have blond hair and blue eyes. The majority have dark hair for one, and many have dark eyes. It's mostly in Scanny countries you get the blond/blue mix, and even then dark hair is quite full.

I think they need VARIETY, and if they are going to draw the characters more realistically, they need to draw the Japanese characters more realistically as well along with everyone else.

Cause if the style would look more realistic then I wouldn't be here and probably a lot of Otakus too. -.-
