Why are most Anime characters lacking asian features?

Two reasons:
1) Because the Japanese artist will draw their characters in a way that they perceive them - not as how we will see them. As Americans, we identify foreigners by the physical features which differ from our own. In reality, these differences form but a very small subset from all of the features which make us human. Why should a Japanese artist draw a Japanese character in such a way that it conforms to our stereotypes? In fact, a Japanese artist will draw a Japanese character in such a way that it conforms to the artist's stereotypes.

2) Eyes are the window to the soul. Highlighting the Asian's smaller, almond shaped eyes makes it harder to show emotion.

I don't understand the point of it. The before looks just as beautiful as the after, perhaps more so.

Yeah, I don't understand, too. The girl was already beautiful.

People think Japanese look like the stereotypical Chinese person when in reality they look quite "western" in appearance, nowadays at least. You can certainly make a case western influences are the driving force behind style and things of that nature. I think the only thing anime characters have an abundance of that is a huge exaggeration is large breasts, pretty easy to guess why though. The light skin and fairly western facial features are not really exaggerations.

Japanese animation is highly influenced by western styles. Even the term anime is french. There's a lot of great articles online if you look it up. But if you want to get into specifics. I'm going to assume you're talking about how the skin tone isn't real dark and the eyes.

As for the skin tone, if you've ever seen a white person in anime it's clearly noticeable that anime characters are in fact Asian looking. Also if you look at a lot of older american animation the skin tone is normally pretty white compared to anime characters. As for the eyes, one of the major influences was Bambi. Eyes are drawn big to show emotion which becomes very difficult with just mouth expressions.

Its all a matter of perspective.
The Asians I talked to have said that they think they would look better, not squinty- eyed

I'm not Asian, but I really like the way they look above all other looks....I don't know why.

How does that explain how some characters look more Asian than others?

And they always draw the one black character in a series with the features that conform to stereotypes.

A couple people mentioned it, but I found a book years ago at Epcot that talked about the history of Anime/Manga.

It talked about how when western cartoons were released, Japan noted the style of like...Micky Mouse, etc. So the appeal of the eyes and what not really influenced them and they took on the style.

It also said that manga and anime kept getting really messy and bland when they tried to do all their characters with dark/black hair...so all sorts of crazy hair styles and colors erupted to help get rid of the bland and messy effect caused by using too much black.

I see some questionable characters - when they draw Americans and when they draw Asians I honestly sometimes find it hard to tell them apart, they all look the same.

You do realize that all these white girls, skinny or fat are imitating Japanese cosplay, right? And for every skinny one you got, I got a whole bunch more fat ones

Either way, I never said anything about anime characters looking "western". Im not even sure what you mean when you say that seeing as how a lot more than just white people live in the west.

Yes, I'm aware of this. I was debating on throwing in some of my cosplay, but frankly, I'm somewhat asian, and that wouldn't prove my point.
Anyway, yes. I live in the west. And I'm half Korean! So that proves your point!
But anyway can cosplay, really. I don't think it matters. And if they're fat, and they think they look good, so what? They're happy.
