Anybody here listen to post-black metal like Alcest or Deafheaven?

And since nobody else has mentioned them... Rings of Saturn. Their drummer is insane.

Opeth is the best death metal band I've ever listened to, they're also progressive metal. Their songs are brutal, but also really groovy too (hence progressive metal). Definitely recommend this band to anybody, it's probably my #2 favorite band.

This might have been posted before but https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrFT84FIxBU Fractal Gates Feat Sotiris of sceptic flesh - "Timeless"

This song is freaking beastly. The melodic instrumental with that heavy death metal vocal style. Reminds me of the Melodeath band, Scar Symmetry when they were in their prime around the time they released the Holographic universe album

I love pre-Heritage Opeth. That album lost me though. Not because it's trying to be 70s prog rock, which I also love. I just think the songwriting on it is awful. Then again, just on principle, I don't like that a band that created a really original sound decided to give that up in order to make tribute music.

Have you ever checked out Atheist?

I'm sad so say I've only listened to the Ghost Reveries album, so I don't know how their music sounds post-Heritage.
And no, I've never checked out Atheist.

Ah. Opeth had a decade-long string of fantastic albums, of which I feel Ghost Reveries was the last one, and it's been downhill since then.

Atheist is not like Opeth at all, but they're progressive death metal, too. They mix in a lot of fusion jazz and even did a samba track once.

Yes, have a dark spot for Alcest and Deafheaven but with more room for Alcest. Guys like this keep pushing BM in directions you'd never think.
Never listen to Rings of Saturn till now and you are right, the man is a beast.

On the Opeth side, they been never really been a Death Metal band, anyway. If you want to hear their Death metal side, try the early Bloodbath releases, Mikael Akerfeldt was up front for that and did some powerful growling. On the later stuff, I did and still do get a buzz from Watershed but did find Heritage a but of a drag but in the nearly 20 years I've been buying their stuff, I'm use to changes of direction and if want to here another Blackwater Park, I can always play it.

I don't have any specific death metal band I listen to but I like some of Cannibal Corpse, Diecide and Obituary's songs.

I'm loving that Alcest and Deafheaven are bringing in shoegaze elements to their music. The two pair well together.
