Everyone is not a newb just because there is confusion whether SOA was one or two seasons. Actually your comment made yourself sound like a newb. Not to be mean but not every anime series changes their title for season changes, many do but many many more don't (Title changes in anime are usually reserved for anime that have a reboot awhile after a series ends and a decision to continue the series is made later.) Most anime just show season changes by changing the opening and closing sequences.

Whoa not really i've seen my fair share since about ten or so years ago, its just all the craze that came from swrod art online that brought up whether or not it was a season 2 or 3 just annoyed me. Yes you are right but that is mostly reserved for ongoing series that go past a standard 52 anime. I'm just saying that what i've learned from watching anime is that most of the time a 13 episode anime is consider a half season series and a full is 24-26. My case is that anime that find their way to america split it like that.

Replace all of them with Greg Ayres' voice and you'll have my vote.

you're probably right. If a third season is made since the anime already stopped they'd probable change the title some... I'd bet it'd still have SAO in the title though so fans that only know about the anime would know its a related title.

Back to the general topic just for the record it will be the third season if another one is made.

The official website even separates it as two seasons http://www.swordart-online.net/story/index.html. It didn't follow the usual one season guide which would be 12-13; the first season had 14 and the second season had 11 episodes. I got real nervous when SAO got to close to the 12th episode it'd stop so I am happy it was stretched to 25 but I want another season that would cover the second half of the light novels since I can't read them.

Can someone answer this question please... How the fuck in ep 14 did Kirito die, then regenerate and then kill the creator? Wtf was that!? Doesn't make any sense to me

Light novel reader here, I can explain. MASSIVE spoiler for the story here, meaning Project Alicization spoiler.

Hope I was able to clear that up for you guys.

No. It is not the case that title changes are usually reserved for reboots. The only anime that continue from season to season using the exact same title are shows that have little to now break and are long running, like Bleach, Naurto, One Piece, Toriko, and Fairy Tale. Space Brothers appears to be in this category, but it may just be one really long season. Hard to tell at this point.

When a show is broadcast for 20+ episodes over consecutive weeks, with a possible week off here and there to match the beginning of the next cour of 13 episodes, it is referred to as one season. Sword Art Online has only had one season, not two.

When an anime has more than one season and is not one of the continuous types, it is standard practice to release the second season with a modified name. There are very, very few times that a modified name has meant a "reboot", like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

Examples:
Full Metal Panic! -> Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu -> Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid
K-On! -> K-On!!
Dog Days -> Dog Days'
Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? -> Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? of the Dead
Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai -> Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai NEXT
Spice and Wolf -> Spice and Wolf II
Aa! Megami-sama! -> Aa! Megami-sama!: Sorezore no Tsubasa (Ah! My Goddess! -> Ah! My Goddess! Flights of Fancy)

None of these were reboots.

Just because the people writing articles sometimes make mistakes doesn't make it true that there were two seasons. The web-site having the split is a little stronger, but by that argument Kokoro Connect has had four seasons, because they separate the episodes by which light novel they originate from on their web-site. If they really meant them to be separate seasons, the episode numbers would not continue increasing. It would be "season 2 episode 1" instead of "episode 15".

I didn't mean reboot as a retelling, I meant reboot as a continuation after a clear stop so basically here where you said "When an anime has more than one season and is not one of the continuous types, it is standard practice to release the second season with a modified name" is pretty much the exact same thing I said. If I meant anime like the tenchi series, FMA and FMA Brotherhood, or Hellsing/Hellsing Ultimate I would of said retelling.

Where you were talking about episode numbers that's only true if a true stop was in between, ex episode 139 of Inuyasha could be 139 or season 6 episode 1 both are correct. The first episode of season 2 of full metal panic would just be considered s2e1 because the project was rebooted (same story line though) later.

I see the misunderstanding now, though your use of reboot is not correct. "In serial fiction, to reboot means to discard all established continuity in a series and start over from the beginning". I believe sequel or continuation would be the more appropriate term.

For instance, the first 6 Star Trek movies were a continuation of the Star Trek TV series. Star Trek: The Next Generation and the TV series that followed were sequels. The 2009 Star Trek movie was a reboot, though it did connect to the original by use of time travel (and very bad science).

That said, it is still the case that an anime series that runs over two consecutive cours is referred to as a single season of anime. There is frequently a change in the OP and ED music at that point as well, though not always. ("Steins;Gate" being a recent example of a two cour series that kept the same OP throughout.) Therefore, when SAO gets another season, and I thoroughly expect it will, it will be season 2, not season 3.
