Ok so I saw this article http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2013/02/23/10000-japanese-anime-fans-name-their-pick-for-most-satisfying-series-of-winter-2013 and at the top was your show, so I want to check it out. I have a question though, I read about the plot of season one and I am really reluctant, but, should I watch it to get the full benefits of season two, or can I just jump into season 2 (because it appeals to me more)

Watch season 1. Honestly, no synopsis does Chihayafuru justice, because any way you phrase it, the premise can make the show sound really boring (even though in fact, it's anything but). It's a very character-driven show, so I would say that watching season 1 first is mandatory.

I also recommend watching the first season.

I'd definitely watch the first season, I'd say it's necessary to be introduced to karuta and the characters.
It's well worth it though!

As someone who watched the first few episodes of season 2 first, before going back to watch season 1, my perspective:

You'll definitely understand and enjoy the season 2 episodes more after watching season 1. As it's a character driven show, you won't be familiar with the characters and their quirks as they reappear in season 2. That said, if you wanted to see what the show is like then the first few episodes of season 2 might be more like the bulk of the series than the beginning episodes of season 1; you'd just have to be able to account for the fact that you're missing half it by not already knowing the characters. I find the most entertaining part of the series the interactions and quirks of all the characters. Because of that, I found the beginning of season 1 a little slow, in that it takes some time to cover the past and introduce the characters.

Thank you so much guys! I watched the first episode of season 2 and I'll admit that I got a little lost, so I'm just going to go ahead to start from the beginning then. Ah I have a lot of catching up to do but hopefully it's worth it!!
