I think he's sort of more relatable to people than other anime characters in a way. In other animes I've watched, the main characters don't really fight problems quite the way he does, giving people a breath of fresh air.

Unrelated, but I was listening to a Japanese Drama CD called "After the End" about a fake scheduling of new Evangelion episodes and the Japanese cast just went nuts making stuff up on how to add new story elements. Super sentai, Rei with more speaking lines, transforming evas, Eva Unit 01 vs Sachiel with only their voices for effects and such. It was pretty funny, but the thing I wanted to point out was that everytime Kaworu tried to talk Asuka would call him a Homo (she never said his name once, just called him Homo) and tell him to shut the fuck up.
