It probably has something to do with the fact of Japan's obesity rate being about 2%.

A fat female protagonist...that sounds kinda funny actually.....how fat are we talking? If shes like four hundred pounds then that might be a bit much...but if she is just a little chunky...whats the harm? I find some big girls to be rather charming and some have great personalities.

Btw skinny women can be just as unhealthy as a big one. I know plenty of "big" women who live very healthy lifestyles. Lets try not to be ignorant.

Indeed, just how fat is fat anyways for this question? Because if you just mean big and or thick then I don't see why not. Alot of mangas and anime feature as main supporting characters those type though not as the central figure.

I always got the impression there weren't a lot of fat people in Japan

(but then, they probably hide them in the media)

You people are kind of overlooking how health-crazed most of Japan is, and they don't really have a lot of fat people, which probably has something to do with it.

I don't know that I would characterize Japan as "health crazed". The fact that a typical Japanese diet is lighter and healthier has more to do with tradition than deliberate choice. Certainly there are aspects to the lifestyles of many Japanese that one wouldn't classify as healthy at all.

My eye is on the pretty girl, pretty doesn't mean skinny.

My preference are blonde women, chubby or skinny, and nice.

Hmmm... I don't know...

Probably because Japan's not a country filled with overweight and obese people like the United States is?

I live in Japan, and believe me, fat people are an extreme rarity over here. As some people here already stated, the percentage of fat people in Japan is only around 1-2% of its entire population, and no, there's no "hidden by the media" bullcrap involved here. I've seen it with my own eyes, and out of the thousands and thousands of Japanese people I've already seen here, I've only seen less than 10 fat Japanese people so far, at most. If I did see fat people in Japan, they'd almost always be Westerners.

Hell, even during the times I attended Comiket or went to Akihabara and Ikebukuro, a huge majority of all the otaku and fujoshi in those places are still slim, and those kinds of people are not usually known to exercise a lot!

All the fat goes to their boobs and butts - that's why you don't see many fat chicks but tons of big breasted and big butt (or both) girls in anime. It's all about where the fat goes, bro.

Its just one of those things i'd like to see also im not talking obese there's a difference between obese and chunky.as cool as it would be to have an anime not focused on the characters weight even though its present, i understand why most characters are thinner, simply because drawing chubby characters realisticly is difficult.

Is it bad that the only anime shows I can think of that favor character designs where girls have meat on their bones are really fanservicey ecchi shows from Xebec?
