Do some of you find the anime sometimes sad instead of humoring. Many of you that has no interest in history might not know what the story is actually based on. The story is actually based on around the time of Meiji Restoration(a very brutal time).

Basically...

around the time there were Samurais like Gin but instead of fighting space alien and obviously losing the war, they fought western influence.

Edit: also let me add that.. If say in Gin's world the aliens never came, He would never have to get beat up by Otose for not being able to pay rent. because he is of the Samurai Class(basically nobel)

I just began watching it and I only watched half of the first episode. Is it as good as people say?

It's great... but I think half the people only think of it as a comedy anime, and do not know what the plot of the anime is based on.

You must be into history? I figure that some of them are based on different things in their history, just like things we see in America but I honestly disregard it.

Most folks find the anime to be pure comedy, and very funny. but I find it sad even if it's a Sci-Fi space world, Gin... whom is of the Samurai caste have barely enough money for shonen jump.

Gintama can be sad, funny, and neutral but that is what makes it so amazing. It has a realist feel to it even though it's not. I researched the time period after I realized it was based on history with the names of historic characters after the character poll fight. I don't have much to add to your forum post except that Gintama is fantastic. I watched the anime Ha whatever it is called that was based on the same time period with the same historic characters but I thought it was boring compared to Gintama. Although, the history behind it is interesting.

The first two episodes left me with a bad impression and I thought it was okay, but not worth watching. I read the first chapter of the manga a few years before watching it and it will hook you in when the manga starts in the anime, which is when Shinpachi and Gin meet in episode three; I think. Keep watching for three more episodes and you may find that Gintama is one of the best animes you will ever watch.

Have to say, the title of your post is a bit misleading as it almost seems like you're dissing the series but yes, what most people fail to see in Gintama is the bigger picture that's really well hidden in an apparently non-existent plot, though behing all the comedy and randomness the story is actually quite strong and serious.

Watching EP 24 right now, it's about Gin and Katsura being taken to a gay club by the owner then getting to know him. You know most folks might not get it but the anime plot really gives an insight and talk about the struggles of the last samurais, and how the meiji restoration had such an impact on how they live their daily lives.

Most samurais, became homeless or drifters sort of like Gin since they cannot transition their skill such as swordsmanship to other types of livelihood, many resorted to doing odd jobs. Sort of like in the story. Odd jobs or becoming a drag queen at gay club.(Most comments for EP 24 were mostly folks "LOL") but they don't actually see the point.

I have been watching Gintama since it started years ago and I have met a lot of fans along the way and became friends with.

....and I am aware of what Gintoki was going thru and the sitiuation behind the mask of the comedy but GIntama is written with a lot of parody in mind. And that is what a lot of fans liked about Gintama and the fact that he tries so hard to make it work but of course along with some crazy comedy written in it.

When GIntoki gets really serious , that is when it is trully sad in many way which you can see it during the movie and in every fights he does,
but it does not dwell on that .....and the Gintama die hard fans are aware of that. You have to take this title as it is

Beisdes not a lot of folks can get into Gintama's comedy but I sure do and I love it and enjoy all the other supporting characters along the way in the past 276 episodes or so....

....I think some of you are taking Gintama a little too seriously. Yes, the history of which is was based off of IS sad, but it's not like they're really focusing on that. Gintama is a comedy. The end.

It's just like the shinsengumi in Gintama. I find them hilarious and lovable. Were the shinsengumi like that in actual history? Of course not. The shinsengumi lead quite miserable lives, and especially the shinsengumi in Gintama. Look up their actual backstory, that's some depressing shit. But it's not like the ACTUAL history matters in Gintama.

for three years i kept on dropping the series after watching part of an episode. after you pull through episode 11 or 16 can't remember which. after which, it leaves a strong impression. in a good way.

gintama is a comedy that take place in the neo meiji era. they don't really focus on the meiji restoration like how rurouni kenshin does. i don't look for comedy in anime to be honest, i look for a really good plot, but at the very least something cool.

its entertainment, yes it can be offending but they take a risk to entertain us.

Hmmm, you don't actually need to know the history to cry for some arc's episodes, like that recent one before the re-re-runs; when that prostitute has to wait many full moons for her lover to return... that was tearjerking for me.

I can paint the history from the anime's satire of the time period, the shogun was useless, just a puppet on a string and the people behind the shoguns were working together with foreigners and the endless civil wars.

A person only needs to watch the anime with an analytical mind, otherwise they will find this anime to be random and not very entertaining.
