First Anime I saw.
It's a good movie although seeing it at like 6 years old would be a bit trippy.

Honestly, I really dont see why it has so much hype. Its just pretty confusing. The plots not great, the characters arent great, the animation isnt great (yes I know its old). I just dont really understand its cult status beyond its pretty old and alot of people saw it a long time ago

That shos that you simply did not undestand it. No offense buddy but this is a masterpiece.
I myself are sick of this kind of animation style since i watched it for over a decade but this is nothing but a masterpeace in every way u want to look at it and not only because it was the first OVA anime wich had a remarcable impact in the western world.

Then explain why its a masterpiece

First of all it's naturally a matter of taste. That's an undeniable fact. But what whakes it to what it is for me are the characters, the story and the animation. For it's time the animation was compared to today like Avatar or something. The characters were mostly well written and u were able to understand them. The story itself, again a matter of taste, was really good. U could follow it through the entire anime without anything missing, to much or misplaced. That's why i claim it as a masterpiece and most important as a milestone for anime.

I have the remastered DVD.. well one of the versions anyway. Just my luck a Blu-Ray was released and I didn't know it. Regardless, glad I have it. Same goes for 5 Centimeters Per Second, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, Rebuild of Evangelion, and countless others.

Akira exists.. everything that we see now simply follows it.

I love it and it still blows me away today. More so than any other anime to date!

Fourtinately, I got a chance to watch the film at an older age sometime in 2009 or 2010. While I may not be as enthusiastic as most are about the film (e.g. Claiming its the best anime film of all eternity in the entire universe), the animation is very well done and manages to break away from the stereotyped "flappy mouth" movement the majority of anime have (not that I'm saying it's a bad thing). I also enjoy the story, although I find myself falling in love with the manga's story more. That and Katsuhiro Otomo's ability to add detail to objects and buildings.

I'll have to rematch the film in the future, preferably once I finish reading the manga (currently on volume 5).

Saw a bootleg copy of the movie in the 90s in Japanese (without subtitles). I understood pretty much of what was going on thru the narative of the action.

Though it wasn't till I watched it a second time (with English dub) that I realized Kei was a girl. You gotta admit she was kinda mannish in her looks and the way she dressed.

And somebody please tell me that Kristen Stewart has turned down the role as Kei. If she's in the live action version I'm not gonna see it.

for it's time the movie was amazing, but now it's still a good movie but has lost a lot of it's impact, i still like and respect it though, but the manga is still much better

Lol you too? That's what most of my friends first think of first when they think of Akira. Mainly because its also what we all wanted to say when the big reveal happens at the end.

This movie is a masterpiece that is on the level of Citizen Kane. Anyone who says otherwise has no knowledge of film or is one of the infected who considers the current anime trends of moe, lolita, incest to be a good thing.

I watched this when I was 8. Yeah, loving parents I had.I'm still glad though its was pretty good even though I became deathly afraid of Teddy Bears . Hopefully someone else remembers the Teddy Bear scene
