That is a bit strong. Off the top of my head I could list a few Miyazaki films that are superior. Akira suffers from trying to fit a 6 volume manga into a 2 hour movie. The importance of the film is how its popularity greatly affected the acceptance of anime in the US and how its visuals influenced many other animated and live action films.

There's no question that the technical feats of Akira are huge. I love this animation but I agree with @jermox, the pacing suffered due to the wealth of material to draw from being crammed in one film. Ghost in the Shell was edited more evenly.

My dad had this movie, a couple of Miyazaki movies, and Evangelion for me to drool over when I was a kid. Because of that, though, I always associated anime with being weird, having mind-screw endings, and generally not making sense (to a little kid).

Now I like most kinds of anime and realize that most of them are pretty normal or shounen-y, but all the crazy ones with screwy animation are still my favorite.

What are you basing that on?

AKIRA was one of the first Anime movies I ever saw if not the first, and I loved it ! it has such a profound affect on me it made me a huge anime fan. I am about to watch it again and have seen it many times over the years it is still the best anime ever I think. I hear there is a movie in the works but as usual it will probably be all messed up. The only other anime movie i have seen that equals or exceeds Akira in visuals (and this is mostly because it is a newer film) is Ghost in the Shell 2 Innocence which is really hard to find now its like $150 on amazon but I am lucky to have a blu ray copy which is literally worth more than its weight in gold now!

I saw this movie in the theatres...

It was a subbed release...

I was enthralled with this story...

When it was released on VHS, bought it. I then bought every reincarnation of the movie on all media just to make my kids watch and love it, as they did...
