Of the many things I like about this reboot, one of the best is that they have made Captain Frakken (or as he was called in the old Star Blazers dub of Yamato 3 "The Bolar Wars", "Lochner von Ferrel" (ugh)) the straight-up coolest character in the show. A lot of fellow old timer fans would, at this point, be more than happy to see a spin-off series of just the wacky adventures of Captain Frakken and his lusty crew of (mostly) blue submariners!

This movie is an original story called "Ark Of The Stars" and is set during the return trip to Earth. It is not about The Comet Empire. Hopefully, they'll adapt that arc after this movie.
This post has more info but you might not want to read all of it.

Here's a translated quote they posted from the yamatocrew site:

After reaching its destination, Iscandar, and receiving the Cosmo Reverse System, Yamato prepares to leave the Great Magellanic Galaxy.

But as they reach the outer edge of the LMG, it encounters a mysterious task force. The commander identifies himself as Goran Dagamu of the Gutaba Expeditionary Rapid Assault Force, under supervision of the Great Capital City, "Gatlantis", and he demands Yamato to surrender.

Yamato wants to avoid the battle and hurry back to Earth but Dagamu's onslaught increases as he unleashes a power of a beam weapon capable of transcending space.

The name of his weapon - the Impact Flame Gun. It is the latest weapon of proud Gatlantis.

Since it takes place during the return to Earth from Iscandar, it can still have Admiral Okita in charge of this mission. And although it's not "about" the Comet Empire, it sounds like the main antagonist will be a Comet Empire commander and the ships under his command. Since the stlll image at macrossworld shows one of the Gamilon battle carriers along with the Yamato, and the preview shows a cool looking Gamilon female officer (holding what I'm guessing is a Gamilon-style coffee mug?) there may be some team-up of Yamato with some Gamilas forces against this scruffy-looking Gatlantis commander.

And who knows? Having thus set up a side-story where a ship of Earth has antagonisms with part of Gatlantis fleet, maybe this will set up a new revised Yamato 2/Comet Empire timeline where this becomes the trigger for a later larger war between the Comet Empire and Earth, perhaps with Gamilas as an ally this time?

That's my thought. They've been doing a good job at fixing continuity problems in the original series, so I think bridging the two seasons in this way would be a good approach.

Although I have yet to see 2199 (due to the lack of a legal stream), I've seen enough via the "first 10 minutes" segments and other previews that were released to know there was a female Gamilon onboard the Yamato in the latter part of the series.

In the original series, they had captured a Gamilon pilot, but that person was male and was killed soon after. I assumed in 2199, they flipped the gender and she survived.

That is correct. Her name is Melda.

The first 3 DVD/BD have been released here, though no one is legally streaming the episodes yet. I'm hoping that will change once the full season set has been released.

TheAncientOne (good to know there are a few users around here my age or older!): Actually the captured Gamilon pilot in classic Yamato was released relatively unscathed (save for a few bruises shaped like Kodai's fists). He was even given some food before release. Although we never see him again in the show, I think we can he assume he lived.

Not so the Comet Empire pilot captured in series 2: He was shown not being allowed to return to his fleet, and ended up kamikaze-ing against the side of the Yamato.

And yes, Melda (the female Gamilon pilot) not only survives, but plays a major role in the story toward the end of the series. After Frakken, she is probably my 2nd most favorite blue person in the show, followed soon after by her father, Admiral Gul Dietz, commander of the Gamilon astro-fleets (with his awesome Prussian-style sideburn-mustache).

I agree with others here that it would be great if crunchyroll could stream this show so that more people could see a legitimate stream without having to pony up the absurd prices for the DVD/BRDs. But I fear the Japanese property owners are afflicted with that odd disease where if they can't make their money the way they want (selling the Japanese way, only high priced discs for collectors), they would rather have no money at all.

Well Yamato 2199 so far has been a remake of original Yamato, aka the "Quest for Iscandar" series 1 story.

This new movie "Ark of the Stars" is a 1-shot standalone story which supposedly takes place sometime during the return from Iscandar, but is otherwise doesn't affect the events of the main storyline. In short, a side-story.

But just about every classic Yamato/Star Blazers fan is hoping that the production team will eventually get around to some sort of remake of Yamato 2, aka "The Comet Empire" series.

The movie takes place in the 45 days between Left Iscandar (Ep. 24) and the encounter with Goer at Balun. (Ep.25)

-and Yeah we all hope this is just so they can finance the CG models for the Gatlantis ships for a proper Series 2.

Hey I"m totally cool with it if they kept the same vibe from Season 1. I'm a fan of both the originals and the reboot. Rarely have I had really good reviews for a "reboot" series. This one I'm happy to recommend. I look forward to the rest of the story that's coming up even if it's something I haven't seen before. Thanks for the synopsis!

Aw. I was hoping for something to continue from the first series. Oh well. I will be looking forward to the movie still. Mostly because the show was so damn good. XD
