While i've probably seen at least 10 shoujo anime I can't name 10 of them I found good. Worse, many series I assumed were shoujo (Strawberry Panic, Chobits, Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl) would actually be considered something else (being seinen, shonen, and shonen respectively).

So yeah...Sailor Moon?

If you haven't checked out Kimi ni Todoke it is one of the few Shoujo romance anime that I would readily recommend to anyone.

I totally agree with you. I think you should checkout Madoka Magica. It's a really good shojo anime.

Nana is about two girls who share the first name(Nana), one an awesome punk rocker, the other a girly girl who comes to Tokyo to follow her boyfriend. They both meet on the train ride to Tokyo, and later try to buy the same apartment, ending up sharing it between them instead. It basically follows their friendship and lives and it's beyond amazing. I mean, this was on my list above Kimi ni Todoke, for crying out loud. And Kimi ni Todoke is love.

1. My Little Monster
2. Kimi ni Todoke
3. Kobato

I've seen other shoujo romances, but they fall into "okay" and below in my book, and so don't really warrant a place on my list. I would call Kobato good and not great, too, so I'm kind of struggling here.

Shoujo romances lose me when they stop being believable. This is usually either caused by pushing the emotional acceleration pedal too hard, having ridiculous misunderstandings, or warping a character's personality. It's true that Kimi ni Todoke sailed close to the wind on the former two counts, but its purity and strength of characters ensured that it didn't fall into those pitfalls (let's not talk about the second season...). My Little Monster is my favourite because I loved the quirky yet complicated characters, and they really stayed true to themselves throughout. I also thought that the drama and comedy was mixed very well, which made the series flow at a nice pace.

You should try Bokura Ga Ita or Kokoro Connect. KC isn't really shoujo, but has a lot of shoujo elements and is excellent.

Lol Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a Seinen work and is the furthest thing from a Shoujo anime you could possibly get. I totally agree people should watch it though, but not if they are looking for something light and idealistic to make them happy. Just like I wouldn't recommend School Days for someone looking for a romantic comedy, or Higurashi for someone looking for a slice of life piece.

Yeah I agree on KC, while being a Seinen work, it focuses heavily on feelings which is typical of Shoujo. It just focuses on some really heavy issues that go along with those feelings.

I have seen Kokoro Connect, but I didn't list it because like you said, it isn't really shoujo. I did really enjoy it, though!

Haha, I'm a straight girl, I just have no problem reading yaoi/yuri etc.

Y'know, I watched Toradora and while I found it alright, I do feel it is highly overrated. I think some classic non-Shoujo romance mangas are Maison Ikkoku and Kimagure Orange Road. (Seinen and Shonen). Nana is a great Josei romance manga. As is Paradise Kiss by the same author.
Yeah I don't have any problem reading Yaoi/Yuri either, they just don't have anything that draws me in to read them. Due to Yaoi's tendency to be centered around dominance relationships(something that I actually don't like including when its straight) I tend to not bother with it unless somebody lets me know ahead of time that a title where it isn't a central theme. I like romances to be romantic. Not to say that I mind assertive/passive characters, but creeper molestation isn't a way to start a relationship. Usually Yuri is more sweet so Im more likely to give it a shot if I'm bored.

Been meaning to check out Nana for a while, but have been busy getting ready to move. I should be actually getting some furniture moved right now but Im burnt out. I'll have to check out the other titles you'd mentioned as I'd either forgotten they existed or just never appeared on my radar before.

Yeah, a lot of yaoi mangas (one-shots mainly) are heavy on the dominance. But I guess, that is what people mainly like to see in a yaoi - the dynamics between the uke and seme. Although many yaoi titles also do not follow that trend. A yaoi series that actually have dominance, and yet extremely strong characters on both sides with a very intricate story is Maiden Rose. It's pretty much the best yaoi I have ever read - but it is very hardcore and the story in intense and at times hard to follow.

If I could recommend a shonen-ai series (or, series with implied/light shonen-ai) then you might want to check out Tokyo Babylon and it's somewhat sequel X (X/1999) both by Clamp. Clamp has a...Unique way of showing different kinds of love.
