Yeah, a lot of yaoi mangas (one-shots mainly) are heavy on the dominance. But I guess, that is what people mainly like to see in a yaoi - the dynamics between the uke and seme. Although many yaoi titles also do not follow that trend. A yaoi series that actually have dominance, and yet extremely strong characters on both sides with a very intricate story is Maiden Rose. It's pretty much the best yaoi I have ever read - but it is very hardcore and the story in intense and at times hard to follow.

If I could recommend a shonen-ai series (or, series with implied/light shonen-ai) then you might want to check out Tokyo Babylon and it's somewhat sequel X (X/1999) both by Clamp. Clamp has a...Unique way of showing different kinds of love.
Yeah I'm generally a fan of CLAMP's work. Like you said most of their stories have to do with love, even though most are non romance, all though they usually take a different tack with it. I'm familiar with X but haven't gotten a chance to read Tokyo Babylon. Though like I said before Its hard to find this type of material that isn't all about dominance, and although while Subaru is a fairly strong personality(at least in X), he's easy prey for Seishiro's abuse. He's one of my least liked characters in X, since he uses Hokuto's death as an excuse to kill Seishiro, when he's just feeling abandoned and angry that Seishiro left him behind, which pisses me off when poor Kakyo has to live in his comatose dreamworld all alone without Hokuto, the only person he could ever love, and incapable of doing anything about it. But the fact that there was a plot behind this made it so that I enjoyed it anyways. X is a series that I can watch repeatedly, and I should probably get around to finishing what material they actually have for X in manga form, but always decide not to just because I know it was left unfinished.

As far as CLAMP's work on homosexuality I actually find Card Captor Sakura to be much more my cup of tea. While super toned down in the anime, the original manga was primarily about the love web between the characters with the whole maho shoujo card collecting thing being a secondary concern, probably because most love lines were taboo ones. Toya and Yukito's relationship there seems much more loving which I appreciate a lot more. I loved that manga because everyone was so positive and hopeful even when their hopes for love don't pan out. I'd honestly recommend this anime for this thread if it actually kept in the actual romance from the manga as it was a shoujo romance, albeit oddball in typical CLAMP style.

See, this is why I usually recommend people to read Tokyo Babylon BEFORE X. Seishirou Subaru and his sister Hokuto are the main characters in that, and you really see Seishirou and Subaru's relationship develop, and Subaru coming to terms with his feelings. The ending of that series really solidifies Subaru's anguish at Seishirou's lies and betrayal, and sets them up for their relationship in X. And it also shows a massive personality change in Subaru - he goes from shy and happy to broken and tragic. It's almost hard to believe that he is the same character in both series.

Now, you said you haven't read all (or at least the chapters X has so far) yet; because if you had read up to the point where it's been on hiatus, you would NOT be saying "...he (Subaru) uses Hokuto's death as an excuse to kill Seishiro, when he's just feeling abandoned and angry that Seishiro left him behind...".

Trust me - this is where a major twist comes in X, and unlike the anime goes into detail about Subaru (and even Seishirou's) TRUE wish/intentions. Subaru is hurt about Seishirou, but he's not using that to his advantage or as an excuse...

I find it funny that you don't like Subaru much 'cause I've actually never come across someone who said they didn't like him lol. And he's my all time favorite Clamp character XDDD ah well, to each their own ^_^

Personally I'm a big fan of Clamp - I've actually read every single one of their mangas like the dork that I am lol. I also love CCS a lot though it's not my favorite work by Clamp (that goes to Tokyo Babylon and X lol), but I agree with you. I love the relationships in CCS, and how positive and hopeful it was. Sure, it might be somewhat sickly sweet, but the portrayal of how love is shown in that manga is beautiful and even inspiring. To love someone no matter what - that's great. And they handle it well as well.

Yeah I should probably read more of those when I get the chance. You are right that I'm basing my opinion off of a limited view of the characters and their dynamic. It might change my mind about Subaru. Not that I ever really despised him or anything. I just didn't think very much of him. He probably would never be my favorite CLAMP character though as both Yuko and Sorata are both pretty high bars set for that in my opinion. I think I'm going to go back and read some CLAMP material I havent had the chance to read yet.

Hehe, I also love Yuuko and Sorata. Yuuko is my favorite female Clamp character tied with Tomoyo from CCS and Hokuto from TB.
