I do. It's really odd on whether I could say whether I am fluent or not.

The problem is I have never spoken it with another native speaker so I probably would have a crappy accent.

On the other hand I have read through a few dozen novels in Japanese, played a crap load of JRPGs in Japanese, watched a crap load of stuff (Variety, Drama, Anime) without subtitles and understood all of it. So basically, I can understand it fluently, but not speak it fluently.

As for why I learned Japanese? Well, so I could read novels, play JRPGs, watch anime, variety, and drama.

I am thinking about picking up Korean so I can play some of those kickass MMOs they have over there.

As far as the Culture goes. I do have some interest in learning it and adopting some philosophies I like, but I have noticed that Japanese culture as a whole is way too archaic for me to want to obsess myself with.

Can' remember if I posted here already.

I can't speak it very well. I can watch a whole series without subtitles and know what they are saying most of the time. I can also listen to drama cds, talk shows, etc and understand what people are saying. Does that count?

I only know a couple of words. Recently my Japanese friends told me that when I speak in Japanese I sound like a male anime character. It bothers me sometimes

I've picked up the very very basics. So I can introduce myself, count to 100 and then ramble off a few unrelated phrases. I could, with a small amount of revision, ask for directions to the train station and understand the response.

I'm thinking of trying to get over to Japan for a holiday next year though, which means starting to learn a bit more seriously now. Anyone got any suggestions for learning from home? Good software, online courses, that sort of thing. I'm using Rosetta Stone for my French study which is pretty good but I'd like to avoid spending another £150, at least in the early stages.

Only what I've picked up from japanese media. I can somehow scramble a plot together if given a raw anime episode, though my guesses are never fully right I can discern enough from context and my meh language skills to interpret what's happening.

My dad downloaded a version of the new Wolverine movie that had quite a bit of japanese but without the subs, so I like had to use my poor knowledge to tell him what the hell they were saying.

Yes I know quite a lot but not enough to have a full on conversation with someone.
