Post Reply I hate to say it, but I won't watch an anime if I don't like the artwork.

Background: I used to watch a little bit of anime when i was younger, but now, its almost all I watch. The problem being, I've been watching anime based mostly on the artwork and the newer series.

I feel like I'm missing out on good anime because of the fact. Maybe I can get some suggestions of great anime with the artwork that's "lacking." Anybody else feel the same?

I implore you to watch Monster. It is an amazing anime and the artwork may not be as pretty as some others, but it is AMAZING.

Hah. Well, I feel like I'm spoiled by anime like Guilty Crown, Hyouka, Samurai Champloo, Chuunibyou. Those has really clean, smooth, and visually stunning animation. I just think my eyes are really spoiled. I want to see if I can jump this hurdle.

Visuals are half the problem I have with Shaft. The only show of theirs that I wasn't incredibly bothered by was ef. A Tale of Memories. Their art style is so distracting in the other works I've seen and it took me forever to be able to get through the monogataris because of it.

Most people wouldn't call it lacking though and as much as I don't like their style I do enjoy the monogatari stuff for the characters and dialog.

I'll admit sometimes I won't give an anime a try because I don't like the artwork. I know I shouldn't, but it happens.

Well it is a visual medium so if the visuals are irritating to you then I don't see why you would want to keep watching. There are numerous anime which you can choose to watch that you could derive enjoyment from, it's not as if missing out on any of them is going to somehow deprive you of anything important.

As for a great anime with terrible animation, I would go with "Berserk". It's full of still frames and terrible quality control, but it has an amazing soundtrack, characters and story.

I suppose, you are right! My only concern is, for example, if this were in terms of movies, I'd be looking into only the movies with high quality, and completely overlooking great independent films.

Try Studio ufotable's works. They did Fate/Zero and the Kara no Kyoukai movies. Their background artwork and animation is basically an eyegasm.

Sports/Romance I never thought I'd like, but I ended up loving it.

Cross Game

also
Touch (more childish, but good).

I hated character design in Code Geass, but it is also one of my top Anime.

I own all of FMA Brotherhood in Blueray so I'm not really sure what the quality is like for streaming, but thats definitely my favorite anime.

Haha I felt the same until I watched Clannad. I hated the artwork the whole way through (even thought it kind of 'grew' on me) but the awesome story and characters made up for it. I feel ya though.

It took me forever to get around to watching Madoka because of their faces.

So yeah, you're probably missing out on something.
