Post Reply I hate to say it, but I won't watch an anime if I don't like the artwork.

Low-quality artwork is a legitimate reason to skip out on an anime in my book. I can relate to the idea of being 'spoiled' by newer anime, because there's some really amazing-looking stuff out there. I find that it's possible to get used to pretty much any artwork style though. It's only when the art is noticeably bad that it bothers me. Because of that, I sometimes have a hard time watching older anime because of the general rise in production quality in the industry over the years.

Those are not always bad, though. It is just older and doesn't have the technology to make it all that flashy. However, a lot of older stuff is better than most of the stuff we have today in terms of story-telling usually (even if any action scenes are better in today's market by a long shot.) Maybe it is because I am a huge Godzilla fan before anything else so old stuff with limitations mean nothing to me as long as the experience is worth the time. XD

To me, artwork is important but not absolute. From my standards, I prefer story > artwork. One of my favorite series is Nana and its artwork style isn't very strong imo. However, the story is superb imo with its characters and I enjoyed the hell out of that. Other series that didn't have impressive artwork imo but I enjoyed are The Tatami Galaxy, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, and Initial D First Season. Some of them don't have the best stories either but I still enjoyed them for the entertainment.

I actually think Tatami Galaxy and Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei had great artwork. Though I completely see where you're coming from with Initial D, it was one of the first anime I ever watched so I was kind of biased. But I bought the dvds and decided to rewatch the series and it looks like a playstation game.
They definitely improve it in the next seasons though.

With me, the artwork has to be at least somewhat unique. Typically I won't watch an anime that has average (School Days) or obnoxious-looking (One Piece) animation. Artwork that I do like ranges from Fist of the North Star to Ufotable.

I hate to admit this but for some reason, I'm not found of how the characters are designed for Attack on Titan but when I start watching it, it may grow on me (not sure about the manga though...). Other that, I don't have an issue to the artwork when it comes to anime.

Background: I used to watch a little bit of anime when i was younger, but now, its almost all I watch. The problem being, I've been watching anime based mostly on the artwork and the newer series.

I feel like I'm missing out on good anime because of the fact. Maybe I can get some suggestions of great anime with the artwork that's "lacking." Anybody else feel the same?

The thing about this statement is that you don't really define what you like as far as artwork goes. Something that I might think it beautiful you might think is ugly, and visa versa.

I'm guessing by lacking artwork you mean older shows in which the prevailing style was different, and due to the fact that it is cell animation, the colors aren't quite as bright and out there. If this is the case, go watch either Fist of the North Star or Space Battleship Yamato. If you can watch through at least 20 episodes of those, you can watch pretty much anything.

I can also recommend Akira and Patlaybor, whose character designs I think look far superior to pretty much all "super spiky hair shonen action hero" type character designs, which have been polluting anime for the past 2 decades.

I do that all the time! It's very annoying because there are some animes with amazing and interesting plots and great reviews, but once I see the artwork and I don't like it, it's a no no. One example is the Wallflower...oh god I hate the artwork.

it does seem a bit of a turn-off when you first see new artwork..
But I reckon you to try them, because you can definitely end up liking it alot!

an example such as Attack on Titan
I understand some people simply hate it.
A few people found the drawing a bit of a turn-off
but then realize it actually fits the mood really well!

Totally can see where OP is coming from. For instance, Arpeggio of Blue Steel seems like a cool show, but I just can't bring myself to watch it with that really weird animation/art style.

i can relate that happens to me but with manga though im very pick and if i do find an manga that has sucky drawings i read all the reviews and if i see some that have super good ratings i will read it even though the artwork sucks . if i find out the storyline is amazingly done i have read the manga although its artwork is not that great i will watch the anime if their is one based on it other than that i dont watch an anime anymore until i have read the manga or have first figured out if the story line is up to standard to what i dig.

I could not enjoy Gankutsuou because staring at the art style hurts my eyes.

I was the same until I watched Gatchaman Crowds which wasn't bad but it had a unique style to it that sort of made it interesting.
