Post Reply I hate to say it, but I won't watch an anime if I don't like the artwork.

I will give you an example

One Piece

Its the only occasion where the art style puts me off watching it. This could change with time though

Background: I used to watch a little bit of anime when i was younger, but now, its almost all I watch. The problem being, I've been watching anime based mostly on the artwork and the newer series.

I feel like I'm missing out on good anime because of the fact. Maybe I can get some suggestions of great anime with the artwork that's "lacking." Anybody else feel the same?

do you read books?
is there a specific theme that you feel like you may have a biased towards? sports, action, harem, slice of life, witches, magic, onmyouji, dark, and such.

what do you consider to be a good story, epicness like kill la kill, gurren lagann, or even attack on titan or a well thought out story line.
i mean have you sat through an anime with crappy story?

also what anime have you watched that has amazing artwork, and what has artwork just good enough so that you would would watch it all the way through.

when people say artwork is good or not. it confuses me, because there are different ways artwork can be amazing and how it can be bad. are you looking for good contrast, no distortions, everything being detailed including background, character design, etc...

anywho, i don't think moribito or beast player erin have the best animation. but i love the storybook style story it gives.

i am a fan of wushu/wuxia films. if you are, then give legend of qin aka qins moon a try. the story is good if you understand how wuxia films are, but its slow paced and the animation is pretty bad but it only gets better.

if you watch hunter x hunter 2011 version, try the 1990's version which pre-greed island arc i prefer alot more. i like the character design more, not by much but i like the darker tone.

i think this kinda crosses over the suggesting anime thread, but i think the discussion is good enough to keep it from being locked.

Usually the ones i think have bad artwork looks bad because i just dont like that anime period.
for example, i did not like k-on at all, thus i hated the art style because it reminded me of k-on.

I have a friend who says jojo's bizarre adventure is absolute shit because he hates the art style.
But i called him out that he hates it because there werent any lolis in it, which he didnt even retort back.

90's = Saber Marionette? I love Saber Marionette, but compared with the animation of these years, it seems a little odd. It is the fault of SHAFT, KyoAni, A-1 Pictures and P.A. Works.

I generally steer clear of art styles that suggest Shoujo animes or kids' animes. However, if I hear from someone else that the show was good I will watch it. It's not really the art style that puts me off, it's just that the art style usually suggests that the anime is going to be of a specific genre. Unless someone really recommends a shoujo anime to me, I don't watch it. Clamp stuff I can watch for example, but like reverse harems or stuff like that just bore me.

This may not be relevant, but I used to think that way too. That all changed when I ran into a manga called Angel Densetsu. The art was unintentionally so horrible that it almost made me drop it from my to-read list. Sometimes, there are gems that are just so rough you have to look past their looks and give it a chance to grow. In my case, the characters and the storyline was so interesting that no matter how badly drawn it was, I still was getting that sense of intrigue to make me want to continue reading.

Yes I have been guilty of drive by viewing, no eye catch move on. But sometimes if you stay for a bit you find a keeper ie: Lovely Complex the character eye's highlights were fixed giving them a glassy appearance, the colours a bit washed out, but its fall on the floor funny.

Same here, i usually judge each anime by their cover first then if it is visually pleasing then i will go ahead and watch it, but if the plot is not to my liking then i will drop it.

One of the example is that Magical warfare from last season. Thought the art work is pretty ok so I went ahead and watched it but dropped it by 4th episode because i can't stand the plot.

I know, we shouldn't judge a book by it's cover but i am busy enough as it is so have to be selective.

I pretty much have almost gotten rid of the whole "won't watch cause I don't like the art style" mentality. It started after I watched One Piece when I was 16 and didn't like the art style so I didn't watch it for a few months till they got to the Arlong Arc.

Then as I was going through that Arc I loved the show more and more been a fan ever since. Eventually I came to appreciate and fall in love with the art style. So for all you guys who refuse to watch One Piece because of it's art style take from me, don't let it stop otherwise you might be missing out.

The last anime that made me decide to be more open mined about art styles was the anime movie Tekkonkinkreet. I knew about when it came out but I didn't see it till I was 18 because I wasn't feeling the art style, until my sis showed it to me and it was a fantastic movie.

I would recommend you to try watching Nagi no asukara because some of the background and scenery artworks are the best I've seen. But overall it just has a nice look to it, and a decent plot and characters.

Only one I recall being pushed away from was Clannad, not because the art or animation was bad, but I didn't like the look of the faces. Needless to say I made myself watch it and it ended up being my favourite anime ever so yeah.
