Post Reply As a Leader Is It Better to Be Feared or Respected ?
Posted 3/14/13
are you talking of fear in the sense that other countries would never think of disagreeing with? what kind of leader do you people want... a warmonger? Respected leaders like those in Uruguay and recently Venezuela are much better for a real democratic society.

Respected....all the way, but don't be a wuss If some one is taking advantage. Provide a system that allows only so many infractions, and if the office badass tests the system...back your words with action. Bosses that wanted me to fear them were just toys I mentally played with on a regular basis, being smarter than most people was always a advantage.

I think you gotta be both. You have to earn peoples' respect....and with that respect, those who wish to do you wrong has to fear for the worst.

It depends on what your trying to lead, in a work situation it is better to be feared instead of respected because you might respect someone but that doesnt stop some people at work from being lazy when they know the boss isnt around even if they respect the boss but if they fear the boss then they will keep working even when the boss isnt around in order to safe guard their job.

In a military situation people will follow a leader who is respected instead of someone who is feared because nobody is going to give their life for someone else if they dont at least respect them.

It all depends on the situation.

Respected obviously as it creates a positive chemistry. However you would still need a sense of authority so a mixture of both would be suitable for a leader.

Do you know what happens to leaders that are feared? They usually end up getting murdered by revolutionaries.

Those leaders clearly did not instill a sufficient amount of fear in their subjects

I guess. But all leaders that lead by fear and intimidation die of violent and or ironic deaths. Look at all the past leaders that lead like Hitler. All their empires fell apart due to rebellion, bad management, and fear itself. A dictator's fate is always violence, suffering, and death because they are using the tactics of FEAR and SUPPRESSION on people, and those tactics never last since people will always want freedom.
