Just curious to see what people think.

I don't see why not.

It's medical. It helps.

This isn't an issue with which I've much familiarity-- i.e. the true medical indications for marijuana. Putting the term "medical" in front of another word doesn't legitimize what that word represents, and might prejudice this poll and any discussion concerning it.

In any case, I'm of the opinion that if marijuana does have some therapeutic benefit that outweighs the side effects and is at least as good as other treatment alternatives for a particular patient population or disease setting, then it should become a part of the legitimate armamentarium for treating that disease or patient population. It might have to remain a controlled substance (e.g. as are most narcotics in the U.S.), but could still be legal in that sense (just as all sorts of narcotic preparations are legal but controlled substances in the U.S., and can still thus be prescribed).

Whether marijuana has such a therapeutic benefit is up for question. I think it's something worthy of study. It's at least possible that knowledge of the drug's benefit has been obfuscated by prior attitudes and prejudices against it. However, those advocating for medical marijuana legalization, in my opinion, would do well to divorce themselves from what seems to me to be the vast majority of the legalization movement which seems concerned only with getting stoned without interference and without regard for consequences, and for which any real medicinal applications are but rhetoric. (Hash Bash at University of Michigan, my alma mater, was a big party and one of the things making Ann Arbor, MI famous, but it was hard to see it as anything but a giant party and a big middle finger to the "establishment.")

Even though I'm not in America, this is a sort of topic that occasionally comes up in Australia too.

No, I don't think it should be legalised. If it is not already legalised for medical purposes, then there is probably a good reason. I'm not sure what medical conditions exactly would be helped by the patient taking marijuana, but I doubt it would be prescribed for common ailments. Also, marijuana would not be prescribed for long term use, so other medicines would perhaps be more effective and less risky.
