So, I have decided that I want to major in Japanese. This was really decided a long time ago, but I have decided to dedicate my time to studying it on my own now until I can study it at an university. The university I am at right now does not have it to take at all, but I plan to transfer after I obtain all my general education credits. I suppose I am a beginner. I can't write or read much, but I can understand and speak some.

Japanese majors, what level of Japanese were you at when you declared your major? I would expect for most people to pick a foreign language that they took in high school as their major instead of one they have only studied by themselves for a year. I am an advanced French speaker, so I know it may seem kind of strange that I want to major in Japanese. Would I be better off studying Japanese by myself and majoring in something else? I would like to teach English in Japan one day. I have about a semester to decide. My main concern is that I won't be able to graduate for a few more years than I normally would because of my current level. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.
