School Days......

hpulley wrote: Thanks for the link! I agree, playing games is a great way to learn Japanese because it gives you a reason to want to learn it, if there isn't a translation out yet. I found that to be a great motivator for me with manga which is often 6 months, years or more behind or just not available in English. Now I just read manga in Japanese. And to get back on topic, I watched School Days entirely without subs (thanks Crunchyroll for letting me turn them off!) which is also both great practice and enjoyable and you can concentrate your vision on the artwork instead of just reading the whole time so I didn't miss one drop of black blood from the ending LOL Couldn't agree more! I'm plowing through chapter 99 of Chihayafuru and when I manage to translate a panel correctly I feel over the moon :-) the same goes for Say "I love you" which has now broken shojo manga conventions; I wish ZEXCS would hurry up and announce the second season. I'm now motivated to reach your level in Japanese, what a rewarding experience that must be! I've only ever watched the dubbed versions of Makoto Shinkai movies, purely to take in his breathtaking skylines and landscapes. |

I love the sounds and action in the anime and wonder how they did it originally in the manga. Might have to buy a volume or all of them to see for myself ... And Say I Love You manga chapters 37-41, OMG not shojo anymore!!! If guys can squee then I did when I read chapter 39 for sure! Let's just hope we don't get a School Days' ending to that manga!!! See, I can bring anything back on topic LOL Subs I can't turn off almost ruin some shows for me especially when they do all the road signs and stuff... |

Though I love the riot of colours and the acoustic experience of the anime, Chihayafuru is one of the most beautifully drawn postmodern series I've read. I highly recommend it! I'm conscious that I'm veering off topic now, but have you heard of Utakoi? This series explores the historical and cultural backdrop of the Hyakunin Isshu poets. Stylistically it's very impressive, almost like a picturebook and the perfect companion to Chihayafuru (I've since grown to love tanka poetry and recently bought the S. Mostow translation of the Hyakunin Isshu :-) Wouldn't it be spectacular to watch a live Karuta game! (P.S perhaps we should continue this discussion on a more relevant forum ;D |

I have never played a Visual Novel but I am started to get interested. Are they generally just games you can buy? I can read Japanese so I wouldn't even need to wait for the translations but I can't say I've ever seen something like even recent VNs on amazon.co.jp so I wonder where I could buy them? Legal only PLEASE, I work in the software industry so I don't want to steal some other guy's programming. Thanks. do you really want to torture yourself with the biggest piece of crap ever made? also this VN is in ANIME form which makes it even more garbage, so its like rewatching the same garbage so since you NEVEr palyed one before its usually just STILL PICTURES with text and voice but this piece of crap was just basically the anime with diffrent scenarios and sex lolololololollollll i played like 2 endings or so since it was so bad the only good one was when one of the girls slit the other girls thraot since she stole him from her cheating netorare everything that sucks I played about 100, I can recceomend a MUCH better school VN |

I am delighted at the veer off-topic in this thread. School Days is one of those shows that somehow seems to get mentioned in every anime thread, so it seems only fitting that its own thread gets sidetracked.

It was honestly my first anime experience. I thought it was going to be like a "slice of life" type deal, with some romance! Not some psychotic chick and sex-crazed dude.
When I finished, I took a break from anime for a good while. |

I can't even imagine the visual novel. Not that I would want to, but if it's anything like the anime.... I don't want to know! |
