I honestly hate them but I still download music. The reason I hate them is because in order for an company to release a season, they need to sell enough dvds but people keep on pirating them instead. I only see anime on websites like CR or Hulu but if I really love the anime I buy the DVD. So far I've bought sora no otoshimono, gun x sword, shakugan no shana, deadman wonderland, to love ru, and C3 Cube X Cursed X Curious.

And yeah I know that gun x sword and shakugan no shana are already finished.

So what are your opinions on pirated stuff?

I'm not going to lie and say that I never pirated. I watch anime that I can't find on Crunchyroll like One Piece and Hajime No Ippo on other sites. I used to download A LOT of music off of flv2mp3/downloadhelper extension and I also used to download lots of movies off of BitTorrent.

but, karma caught up to me one day because I forgot to delete a movie I downloaded and it stayed long enough in my connection so that my ISP called and warned me not to pirate again. I don't download illegal music anymore, Pandora just takes care of all my worries anyway. As movies are concerned, I don't buy new ones because I watch them in theaters so I only spend like 5-10 bucks on old movies I've never watched before.

It's not that I loathe pirating, I understand that it is wrong.

However, the pirating group will always be growing faster than the paid group.

Right now, because kids got caught with many movies with BitTorrent, everyone is using pirated movie sites like movie2k to stream videos "legally." I've researched the legality of the action, and it seems like a lot of people disagree and agree about if it is legal or not.
I contacted someone I know who works for a big ISP and he said that ISP's don't/can't catch people for streaming movies. In my opinion, I think it is illegal in that the data is stored in your cache, but a lot of people would disagree.

Bottom line is, hardly anyone gets caught for downloading music, and hardly anyone who streams illegal videos will get caught. and of course, ISP's don't really give a damn if you stream illegal anime videos or not.

I can't lie and say I've never pirated, but at the same time any series that I do enjoy I do end up spending a decent chunk of money on for my collection. I think it's important that we support places like CR, because it will show producers that indeed a large amount of people do want to see more content and thus it is possible for them to get more licensing for us for more anime that we might not normally get.

You can't really blame pirating for all the issues (like most developers in the gaming industry seem to), but they are a small part of the problem. But when it comes down to it, pirating is a choice someone makes and they have that freedom to do so. I don't hate pirates, that's their choice, and I would be a hypocrite because I've done it myself, but at the same time it's very important that we show support so that we may possibly get more anime/games/whatever it is you enjoy to North America.

Guilty as charged for pirating...
But it's bad. It's illegal. We shouldn't do it!
But it's so tempting... And so fantastic....

I used to download music but that was when I was like 10
Illegal downloading isn't right. Support the creators of the content you are downloading~

This idea that people only pirate because they want things for free is really absurd. Some people in other countries simple don't have an option with regards to anime, CR does not offer everything to everyone and to further compound the issue for people in Region B typically things are released Region A and not region free. So even if they wanted to support that new show they really like they have no way of watching it. What exactly are they supposed to do?

Yeah a lot of people just pirate because they want free entertainment and that will never change no matter how try to stop it. Giving a majority of the population a cheap and good quality alternative like Crunchyroll or the forthcoming Daisuki streaming site is really the best option. However this isn't perfect either because only newish anime will get this treatment old or obscure anime will typically still only be able to be found fansubed on a bittorrent tracker. There is no perfect solution but if anime creators get serious about expanding their market they could stop milking jp otaku for all their worth and make some gains internationally.
